In the past couple of days, a couple of GMs discovered a major technical issue with the script that handles lockpick carving.
A little more specifically, there's a problem with the way that the script goes about attaching text to the lockpicks. It's a big enough issue that it had to be addressed immediately.
As of right about now a couple of things have changed:
1) newly carved lockpicks aren't going to have a "look" description attached to them
2) it's currently not possible to carve initials/names onto grandmasters.
This will have no effect on anything like difficulty, exp, etc.
We're going to be taking a look at what options are available in terms of other ways to accomplish the things these bits of code were doing, but there's no information available yet on what form that will take or what kind of time frame is involved.
Sorry guys. I'm not thrilled with just turning features off like this, but that code needed to be shut down.

Lockpick Carving Change on 11/26/2003 04:23 PM CST
Re: Lockpick Carving Change on 11/26/2003 04:35 PM CST
Since no one will explain the situation in detail for fear of messing up and spilling too much detail and getting into trouble, I feel like I need to come explain it as much as I can.
Basically, each line of text on any item, be it a LOOK description or a TAP description or a READ description, is stored in our system and assigned a number. Different ones are assigned different numbers and when you attach that number for a description to an item, that's what it LOOKs or TAPs or READs like. (Ages ago, there used to be several rare items in the game that were actually bits of food or arrows or pieces of charcoal that accidently had "room descriptions" on them. They were very sought-after items. Some of you will remember them.)
Basically, every time someone carved a lockpick, a new and totally unique number was assigned for each one (thus storing the exact same description in our system hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of times in a row), even though most of them all say the same thing. It's taking up a LOT of resources and it's something we will fix, but it's not at the very top of the priority list, since the way this will be handled in the near future (DR II) will be (much) easier to design and code. Immediate removal was mandatory and, at least for now, I don't want someone spending time re-coding this semi-minor feature when it will all end up being re-done shortly anyway.
I made the call on this, so don't blame anyone for it other than me. The lockpicks will all have the same stats and strengths, they'll just be a little "less elaborate" than normal for a while.
Apologies,
Solomon
