I hate bringing this to conflicts, because most times when things come here, they are past the point of resolution. But here goes anyhow.
The situation in Theren is tenous at best right now. I have lived here quietly for a while training survival, hunting a bit and learning obscure skills in my retirement. When the Breannya situation arose I came out of trading retirement to help fill the need that Theren folk said there was for Traders. I had sold on occasion when I felt it wouldn't be stepping on anyone's toes. I thought the traders that frequent the area had a regular business that filled the needs for Theren.
If this is truly a business competition, then unfortunately the traders are left out. I can offer a nice bonus for the pouches but I'm not comfortable announcing that over the gweth. It's like telling folks my bank account balance. I can't heal, though I can offer knowledge into the herbs needed for a wounded hunter. The younger traders can't offer the 25% bonus over appraisal yet without more training. Some traders can offer the gweths and lockpicks but others aren't established enough to have a producer trust them. Offering extra coin would be self-defeating. Even refusing a tip would be hard for some of the younger traders that are trying to make thier way in the world of Elanthia.
If this is truly a cry for the need of traders in Theren, then it has worked...they are here. I know that I stood in Gruk's for two hours today offering my services over the gweth and had one customer in that whole time. I have heard the notions of boycotts on the gweth and really hope that is not the case.
There is no outward competition between the traders in Gruk's. The experience is spread out with smiles and I usually aquiese to the younger traders because this isn't about the experience or coins for me. I left trading a long time ago when the RP of the guild was lost in the shuffling of contracts. A lot more coin can be made by other guild characters that are actually having fun making it. Running contracts for trading exp is one of the most boring primary skills to train when you are ATK. It has been fun meeting people and RPing again, this conflict aside. The only real competition between traders would be with the trader that sells Breannya's pouches. So Apu, would be great to have you visit up here, but you aren't needed yet to just knock a few heads together.
As for Breannya, Couri has never met her so just smiles and waves when she sees her. She has never spoken to or about her over the gweth. The suggestion was made that she sell when no trader is in town. I think that would be a great thing for the folks of Theren, if this is really about having Traders to sell pouches. She is well established now and they would know where or how to find her. If this isn't about Traders in Theren, then I know the traders will give up eventually and the town will be loser when Breannya is gone or moves to Crossings or Ratha to expand her horizens.
I do hope some agreement can be made so that Theren will have thier gems sold, traders will work, tempers will not flare and Breannya can be the businesswoman she wants to be.
Thanks for listening to the ramblins of a very old elf.

Re: Theren troubles on 06/27/2003 08:36 PM CDT
Hi Couri, good to see you speaking out.
Okay, i'll try to keep from being negative here. I'm generally not the negative type, and most people i've dealt with know me as friendly.
How did this all begin?
I was between Lang and Haven, having just picked up a shipment from one of my suppliers. (Yes, I deal in gweths and lockpicks as well.) I heard Breannya advertise on the gweth. I was in complete shock. An empath selling gem pouches? What the... I knew Indigoe was a Therengian and thought he handled most of the business up there along with some of the younger traders in the area. Why? Because i'd never heard otherwise at any of the socials where i'd seen him.
I was angry that an empath would be so presumptuous (in my mind) as to invade my territory. I felt like if she'd wanted to do my job, she should've been inducted into the guild i'm a member of. I felt like she was stealing from me, that simple.
So, I did what I saw as the only solution. I moved to Theren myself. Little did I know that my plight would bring other Traders - Couri and Floria frequent Gruk's now, and there have been a few others in and out. I think it's great that such a reaction was induced. I'm glad to see that there are other Traders who go where they're needed, instead of feeling the need to go where money is (such as Zoluren).
Speaking of money, don't think Breannya's the only one that declines tips. Especially on the smaller pouches, it's quite common for me to decline tips, or give coins back if the person decides to be sneaky.<g> In case anyone is curious, I tried skimming for a short time when I first started selling pouches, decided it wasn't for me since I felt like I was stealing, and never did it again. I take turns selling pouches in the shop and state as much when asked by other Traders. Couri's a weird exception, seems she doesn't want pouches at all... I still try to get her to take some once in a while. Bottom line, money's not why I sell pouches.
I've received support from many Traders in what i've been saying and posting lately, and in my move up north. From the responses on the boards that aren't supportive, it seems people view me as trying to avoid competition, or perhaps just a little bitter because she's able to do two jobs. Actually, I REALLY REALLY wish that someone (such as Godrich or Ilanya) would tell her to stop doing my job or take it on fully. In other words, quit taking work from the younger traders or join the Trader guild. Oh, the sweet irony that would be involved in such a day. Keeping interested as a Trader is hard, sometimes I don't know why I love my job so much. I don't know if she'd be able to do it, especially with the kind of comraderie we have in the guild. No offense to Pucktin, he's better now than he was, but he tried going a different way when he was a younger Trader, working against the group, and it didn't really work out for him.
I dig my job. A lot. It's the second one I've tried and I don't think i'm going to need a third.
Breannya can do as she chooses. I will maintain my opinions. Now that everyone involved knows what's going on and has heard both sides, they can maintain theirs as well. The problem of Traders to sell pouches in Therenborough is not a problem anymore. I'm glad to say I could be a part of solving it.

Gah...with a jerky statement like that, Ahkshan, I could see why you would have some issues with folks.
I never said I cared for you or Pucktin (I don't even know ya'll) or anything else by siding against an empath/trader buying pouches. Don't get confused. Suppor of an idea has nothing in common with the person who put it forth. I'm not fighting for your right to do squat, just don't like an empath doing it for some mule trader is all.
Geez.

Philosophy:
Anger is the result of when we're presented with undesired situations that we have absolutely no control over.
Someone's trying to make money, even if it's your job, and there's not a dam thing ya can do about it. Sounds about right.
Irony:
Just because you join a guild that's designed to work with money, does not mean that ye will some day attain it.
Barbarians - work those weapons, and you too can spend 5 gold on supplies to forge a weapon and sell it anywhere from 10 to 20 plats.
Rangers -- Level up a good ways, then go rope yourself a horse, train it for 10 hours and sell for 50 to 100 plats. Don't like horses, just skin.
Paladins - Train up the armor's and ya can forge some really good chain. It's worth alot more than the weapons sell for, so ya don't have to make as many
Baker's Guild - get a few keyblanks for close to the price of nothing, and proceed to carve.
Empaths -- Heal, buy pouches, sit on the arse, shift, and whine about not not getting big enough tips near the crossing.
Bards - <shrug> plays a tune for a few coppers <shrug>
War mages -- Enchanting is supposed to be out.........whenever....
Moonies -- contract a few traders to find K and J stones for ya, do about 2 to 4 minutes of work, and reap half the profits, Or find your own J and K stones and reap all the profit. Seems gweths have been selling for quite a few plats.
Trader - Sit behind a Yak and tell that driver to take his happy arse to the next outpost. Profits usually yield about a few gold per outpost. Very repetitive. must follow yak to get the next 7 trains of trading per circle.
There are 2 markets in Elanthia -- the game market and the real market. If everyone was confined to the game market -- traders would have a decent life, and we would be happier. However, the main problems come in with the Real market. appraise that forged sword that ye have. it's no wonder that the economy is screwed up. people are paying 15 plat for a sword that is valued under a gold kronar. Unfortunately, Traders don't have anything that is able to compete on the 'real' market. Maybe one day they will - Until then, Suck it up, drive on, and follow that broken down yak while the shadows reach for your pockets.
Personal Views:
I'm not thrilled about the idea over an empath walkin in on what is traditionally considered a trader's job. I also believe that if she is advertising selling pouches, that she should be the one selling the pouches. Write a script, or whatever - If ye advertise selling pouches, then sell them - No running to a backup trader. Script sell the gems, or sell each individually. If and empath buys, then the empath should sell themself.
BUT, back to the reality, and policy of it all:
There's no higher power that's going to step in and stop it unless it becomes way out of control. There's nothing stopping the circle 80 theives from foraging the pockets of the circle 5 traders, so how would this be any different? Threaten the person, no problem, mabe a harassment assist. Attack the person, and now you have a report coming from an empath that doesn't swing a weapon and frowned upon activity from the general townsfolk. Interpretation will come from the on-duty Green Mage, and you're most likely to get screwed from just one person excercising judgement rather than a group of people trying to see all angles.
Parting question: of the 20 most financially well off people in the realms -- how many of them are actually traders?

Re: Theren troubles on 06/28/2003 12:47 PM CDT
Excellent points, Sleus.
You're right, there's nothing I can do about it and I know it, which is why I gave up trying. I might mention something to our GMs, but I highly doubt they'll do anything about it.
Just a quick correction, Breannya wasn't advertising selling pouches, she was advertising buying them. She later sells some of them to someone else, from what I understand. A false advertiser she's not, just a few other things. <covers his mouth>
To change the topic of what's going on up in Theren, I've never been a fan of people who buy characters, plats, etc. for RL money. I mean, if you're going to have something IG, why not earn it? Oh right, because that's not how the world works, let alone DR.
So, facing reality, I know that every guild has ways to make tons of money (save a couple) through the creation system. That will expand more when careers come out.
What I don't understand is why one of those guilds that can't really create anything that's worth tens, hundreds, thousands, etc. of plats is the Trader Guild. Maybe it's just me that thinks that's odd.
I'm in no major rush to have thousands of plats to my name like some of the better forgers/tanners around. I'm fine with what I can make now, but this situation makes me wonder if the GMs know about what's going on and have intentionally set it up to be so, if it sort of snowballed and they really didn't mind, or whatever else might be the reasoning.
I'd really like to know a GM's opinion on that, as well as the issue of selling characters/plats for $.

<<Appraise that forged sword that ye have. it's no wonder that the economy is screwed up. people are paying 15 plat for a sword that is valued under a gold kronar.>>
This will probably be changed to have it so that the appraisal of what you set the price at on the tables will be the appraisal price of the blade.
<<Unfortunately, Traders don't have anything that is able to compete on the 'real' market. Maybe one day they will - Until then, Suck it up, drive on, and follow that broken down yak while the shadows reach for your pockets. >>
When you rise in circle in the Trader's guild, you will notice that working the trade routes will yield a MUCH greater profit then what you seem to be referring to (a few golds, you had said). There's almost no risk when working on trade routes (Thieves, possible invasion once every few weeks?). The only thing it is, is repetitive, but most of the things in DR are repetitive - as you must hone your skills in trading to become better at it (same goes with everything you do in DR and RL, to some extent).
To say that Traders have nothing is absurd. You just need to put effort into it.

I completely agree with this. I personally dislike when people buy plats or characters, because you are disregarding the effort it took to make THAT character. Your basically bypassing everything IN THE GAME and your excuse is that you have had OOC assistant (the buying of the plats or characters via money).
<<What I don't understand is why one of those guilds that can't really create anything that's worth tens, hundreds, thousands, etc. of plats is the Trader Guild. Maybe it's just me that thinks that's odd>>
Traders can make hundreds, thousands of platinum coins if they put their effort into selling via market tables or trade routes. Market tables are not a creation system, selling contracts is.

Selling contracts via trade route is a creation system - you are trading in something for plats from an NPC. By that, your generating new coins into Elanthia. As far as tanners/forgers/gweth makers - They set their own prices and people buy them (more interaction). Hopefully, the alignment system will help in discussing with NPCs more often so trading can be more exciting for you.

Re: Theren troubles on 06/28/2003 10:04 PM CDT
Good grief.
Sleus did an excellent job of outlining what other guilds can do to make money, and I'll only add that a trader can make money getting involved in _every one_ of those markets.
My forgers are as grateful for the money I bring them as I am for the money they bring me.
I decided to sell weapons even though Naria had 21 forgers and an untouchable reputation and I was a nobody with a forger no one ever heard of making half the quality. I made money, made reputation, got more forgers, and created an empire (::evil laugh::).
I decided to sell leather masks from Shard at 900% markup even though any yokel can go down to Shard and get one. Even though any novice can go down to Shard, buy 10, and undercut me outside the tent. I made money.
Before I became an employed member of society IRL, I bought lockpicks and gweths at _full price_ in Crossing, and resold them in distant provinces at markup. I made money.
I paid thieves double pawn shop value for stolen shop goods in certain cities, and resold them. I made money.
I traded horses and taught advanced riding. I made money.
The trader's guild is very diverse. Not everyone has to take the merchant path. Not everyone has to sell gems. But whining about one little empath? There's no glut in the market. There's a dire shortage of traders. There's money to be had. Go get it!

If it doesn't fall into their laps they don't want it, they're affraid of a little HONEST work.

I don't get it, Idora, what do you consider "HONEST" work? I run tables, sell horses, run contracts, and yes, sell gem pouches and furs. I was called to Theren for the lack of Traders to sell pouches, so that's what I've been doing there.
Ironically, today I decided to try running some contracts for a bit of excitement. About 20 minutes after I left for Muspar'i, I heard someone asking on the gweth for a Trader to sell pouches. Ironically, today I decided to try running some contracts for a bit of excitement. About 20 minutes after I left for Muspar'i, I heard someone asking on the gweth for a Trader to sell pouches. I responded that I was running contracts and would be back soon, to which I heard the response "Someone wake up Breannya, there are no Traders around!" and other such comments.

I've gone down to Shard for a short while to help Azhag with the contract theory bit. I'll be coming back to Theren when i'm done. As for Rossman's, i'm always willing to go out there to sell pouches if anyone needs me, all they have to do is gweth about it and i'll sail over.

I believe that gem shop is financed by Gossford. He bought into it when I was there selling gem pouches before he got there to finance it. You are taking away from his profit if you sell the gem pouches to that shop. My personal belief is that if it's a financed shop I won't take away their profits. I wouldn't want someone to take mine.

<<I believe that gem shop is financed by Gossford. He bought into it when I was there selling gem pouches before he got there to finance it
Are you referring to the one in Rossman's?
Okay, now, this isn't a sarcastic question. I'm really dense when it comes to financing, but how is selling gem pouches in Rossman's (or any financed shop) taking away from business? I can understand stocking piling the pouches instead of actually selling them as well as a trader really high in circle making the profit earned on the pouches less (for the Financier).
But for a small circled trader (15th-30th being small in my eyes), I don't think it should make a difference. Especially if some (not all) people would rather stockpile their gems and go to Theren or Haven to make one big swooping sale.

<< Why should a small trader sell their gem pouches when the customer can sell their own at a trader financed shop and probably get a better price then the small trader can?

Well, you are very right in that regard.
Hmmm, okay...Call me silly, but once upon a time, I realized I can't do everything as one character (Despite how hard I try). I like to pick boxes, I like to tan, I like piddling around the forge. But as a Barbarian I'll never be great at any of that. When I start hunting at a certain level, I know that my lockpicking skills will start to slack, and I'll need a locksmith. I'll need a ranger for some nice leather armor, a barbarian for some nice weapons, and a paladin for armor.
One day I know this will all change (probably sooner than later) due to careers, lore splits etc.
I know most players/characters in Prime want the most bang for the buck, so they'll cut corners where they can. Me though, and I only speak for me, if there is a trader in a gem shop willing to sell a pouch (even if I can sell myself) then I will go with the trader. Not because of increase profit (which sometimes is not the case) but because I'm doing him or her a favor too.
Example: Horse Clan and Shard. People on the go will just go to Horse Clan and sell their gems in a hurry. People who want more bang for their buck will wait around for Xip or one of the other big traders. But I'm willing to bet that money isn't the ONLY reason they wait around. I bet many want to help "support" the trader livability down there. <shrug>
But I could be wrong...

>I don't get it, Idora, what do you consider "HONEST" work? I run tables, sell horses, run contracts,
I'd call HONEST selling people what they asked for, not some equivelent they didn't.
You Sold me HC that appraised the same as LC, not LC.
BIG difference there.
That's Dishonest.

Idora -
I've never been much of an armor expert, so I don't sell it very often, and if I did sell you something that I claimed was something else, all you would have to do was come to me and let me know, and i'd gladly give you a refund. I've never refused anyone that wanted to return something they bought from me.
As for my "claim" that the armor was something it wasn't, I don't lie about my merchandise, and assuming you're not confusing me with someone else, it must have been a mistake on my part.
I've never had a deal where my customers come out dissatisfied and i'm always prepared to reimburse someone if i've made a mistake, often even if they've made a mistake by buying the wrong item. So please, don't go calling me "dishonest" without confronting me first. Besides - I don't recall having ever sold you anything - being that you're one of the older Traders i've met, I feel like I would remember such a transaction.
