Okay...now this is in this folder because if it was skimming then well it's a conflict. While if it wasn't I'm sure someone will point it out. This is a log of what happened.

[Mother Magpie's Gems and Metals]
A thin film of grease and dust vies with the cobwebs to cover the floor and counter in the tiny shop. Old Mother Magpie is a familiar character to residents of the area commonly known as 'Tog Town. Dealing in gems and precious metals, rumor has it she also sponsors a band of street rats who bring her some of her... rarer items. You also see a bucket of viscous gloop and old Mother Magpie.
Also in the room: Peddler Dolan.
Obvious exits: out.

Now I don't understand how the first time he could be so much over, then the third time under. While I admit I should have and didn't double check with the second pouch, I find that odd. Is there a reason behind this or was I just skimmed?

I know it's uncomfortable sometimes to ask why a trader is offering under what you were offered from the gem merchant, but this is your right. I know sometimes there is a variable but this does seem like a big difference. Sometimes, the trader will just respond that he or she is young. I was under appraisal sometimes when I was a younger trader and it never bothered me if a customer preferred to sell with someone else. Why the trader could be that much higher and that much lower later? I honestly don't know. Next time, just ask or politely say, "No thank you" if there is that much of a difference.

The most he offered over what you got told was 15%. When he offered under, it was by 3%. See Apu's post.

As strange as it may seem, those numbers you listed actually ARE well within the extreme limits possible due to pure randomness. By no means am I going to tell you that Dolan did not skim money from your pouches, because I don't know, but it's not really possible to deduce anything from those 2 data points alone.

Those numbers for the 1st pouch would be possible if Dolan's bonus was anywhere from -6% to 37% (although we can't actually have a bonus less than 0%)

Those numbers for the 2nd pouch would be possible if his bonus was anywhere from -23% to 17%.

So really all I can tell you for sure is that either Dolan's bonus is less than 17% or he skimmed money. One other thing is that it would be alot easier to tell if you were skimmed if you also knew the base appraisal value of the pouch (by appraising it yourself, if your appraisal skill is high enough to get it correct every time). For example, it's difficult to say anything for sure because even when you are offered 14253 lirums on the 3rd pouch, the appraisal value could conceivably be as low as 12957. So if it really was that low, Dolan actually got you a little increase - just not as good as the increase you were offered because you got the best value you could have.

Doh, too late :)

Well hopefully what I just posted explains a little bit more, since I think part of what promted the original was not just "is it possible for a Trader to get offered less?", but "is it possible for a Trader to be high enough level to get the large bonus shown on the 1st pouch, and still get offered less on the 3rd pouch?". It actually turns out that it is.
