I posted a response to Frogspawn about the sorts of research the Aether cabal is doing, but the response was in the Conflicts folder since I was responding to her. I'll repost it here also. Suffice it to say that when we first started, we also thought that the research might go fairly quickly - and then we kept on coming up with new questions.
Also, I find it sorta odd that people are wanting to fight about whether or not the Aether Cabal is 'stupid' for doing what it does. It always seemed like a pretty innocuous thing to me - people who like Aether spells, learning as much as possible about them and their use, and RPing the process. I suppose it goes to show that people can take issue with just about everything.

Actually though, we don't have 5 people researching it :) I'm the main person for ES, and occasionally I get some bits from the other members when their research overlaps with mine.
There's surprisingly a lot of stuff that can be sorted out about spells. Here's a few that we've thought of:
How to cast it most effectively (getting the function with smallest amount of mana)
How it can be expected to work at different levels of skill?
How effective is it? If the spell is a defensive one, what does it protect against?
How does the spell work differently against characters, instead of critters?
How does the spell work in conjunction with other spells?
How can you cast this spell best for learning purposes?
What creatures in the realms are best affected by the spell?
And so on. Needless to say, we aren't just asking the question "What does this spell do?"
I think the most annoying thing we had to deal with is that we had a lot of information already gathered, before the Big Magic Change :D Now we have to do it all over again. But at least it gives us something to do that we can RP for a long time.

Oh, that's simple. If one of the cabals is functioning without GM support and special goodies, it's less likely we'll get cool moon-mage sect abilities.
Oh, wait, I mean cabals.
Seriously though, I admire what the active cabal members are attempting to do and think all thus fuss is silly. But I know that if cabal membership offered perks, I'd join up in a second, and then not participate at all except for second-hand rp to justify my perk-usage. I just don't have the time to participate in the real meaty rp-functions of a cabal, and my decided fear is that mine is the majority attitude.

IG, base membership to an ELEMENTAL on ATTUNEMENT 'when' the GM's have time to complete it.
Assign CANTRIPS to WM's ATTUNEMENT and SPELL BOOKS when it goes live as IG perks for ELEMENTAL ATTUNEMENT and study.
May the Cabals R.I.P.
