Fellow Warrior Mages,
I bring further historical evidence as to why all cabals should be banned. This is a quote from our own history books. Take it to heart and unite with me in the banishment of cabals.
<< For many months the Gathering continued, each day bringing new
insights into the world around them, and into the very heart of magic.
But, as the store of common knowledge slowly ran out, and the rate at
which new secrets were discovered began to slow, there was division
among the gathered Mages.
Each Mage felt they should concentrate their research in a specific
direction. Some wished to study the element of Water, others Fire.
Others wished to learn how to combine the elements to control the
weather.
Mages whose goals were the same, or near enough to find common
cause, began to band together in the hope that greater numbers would
sway their fellows to follow them. This proved ineffective, and after
many weeks of long and bitter arguing, the Gathering ended. Each group
went their separate ways, to found a new Clan based upon studying and
understanding a specific aspect of the Elements.>>
Read and understand the book. We will eventually split again and fall if this is not stopped.

Weak minds and ineffective leaders. They could not see the bigger picture in their studies and what impact they would have on the whole of Elemental Magic. Focused research into the guild many facets will yield a better understanding once the information is gathered. That is what the guild is for, while seperate we all remain Warrior Mages. Focused study can only lead to the betterment of the guild as a whole. The Cabals should... and shall rise.

I would not expect a fire cabal to thrive near a water cabal.
But, isolated, look to what earth spells might be created and discovered? Separation does not mean conflict.
Then, come the next year, a guild gathering of a week or two would bring us all together to share what we've discovered.
Warrior mages do not often associate in large gatherings anyway, so what worry of divisiveness when it is already present. The only notable exception is the Crossings guild which has an almost constant gathering.
Strong leaders, strong goals are what will lead the cabals.
Fear of a "what-if" will keep us stagnant and weak as a whole.
We need to evolve!
(Gratuitous exclamations: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Such a cabal gathering would be a grand thing for everyone- traders, entertainers, demonstrations of prowess in magic and martial skills. Weapons will be sold, some of the finest quality, others only works of art.
In short, a festival while the Cabals are gathered. Intrigue, yes, but also a chance to share secrets, information, and, perhaps, training?

Counter argument:
"Many Mages, those who knew how to turn the powers of Fire to
destructive ends, eagerly joined, wanting the secret of Blackfire.
Others, *those who had discovered how to turn Fire to healing
purposes, or defensive, were destroyed. And so only the destructive
powers of Fire have survived to current times.*"
Rediscovering lost arts could be extremely beneficial, especially if we can learn from our previous errors.

Lieutenant Melniibone,
I understand your motivation for taking the position you have. However, I fear that your alarmism is far more likely to cause division than is any gathering of elementally minded Warrior Mages. The Aether Cabal of today has no connection to any failed organizations of the past; it is entirely new in its conception. We are simply a group of Warrior Mages who are interested in the element of Aether and are willing to dedicate some time to the research thereof. We hope that by these means we may bring a greater understand of Aether to all Warrior Mages. Similarly, if a separate gathering were to explore the element of Fire, for example, the members of the Aether Cabal would be only too glad to receive their findings and employ them in our use of that element. I fail to see how divisiveness could result from our work.
Sincerely,
Jolebin Swordstaff, Elemancer of Riverhaven
OOC: Seriously, man, we just want to get together for some quality roleplay, and see if we can figure out the relationship between mana and duration of an Ethereal Shield, and how many ranks of TM it takes to hit a swamp troll's neck with an Aether Lance. And after we figure it out, we'll share the info with everyone. :)

Jolebin Swordstaff: You might think your intentions are good... Hell they probably are, but you really need to look at the big picture. Back in the early days, mages probably gathered to see how much mana to focus on to get the prehistoric version of fire shard to not incinerate the whole forest while killing the stupid deer. Research as part of the whole community. Get together to learn how to hunt using all the elements. Warrior Mages already live on a slippery slope as it is and there is no need for tempting the fates... now, or in a few generations.
OOC: Don't take this personally. I don't have anything against you guy. You have great intentions, but Elriic signs all of his posts with: ~For the Balance! The Aether Cabal, Blackfire and all the others by thier very existance threaten the balance. I can't back down. It might impact you negatively, but I feel pretty strong about it. I'm not gonna break down into a name calling fit or some other lame response, but I will tell you that you're in for a fight if you want to keep the cabal concept going.

Balance is inherant in all the elements, (Except for the books- earth needs help) and one cabal would balance the others. It's a larger organism...
Balance is a thing Nature will find in its way. For one man to claim he knows the proper balance is folly.
Do not seek to supress the choices of others for they will push all the harder and more destructively.
One man cannot fight the future!

OOC: Balance...blackfire is not fairly represented in this balance. As one of the -very- few players that have had the chance to experiment with the spell, Magmus is very zealous of Blackfire being re-instated in the guilds spellbooks. Or at least, be removed from the century old ban. The elements are always balanced in theory, however as others have stated, certain books need more work. Yet, certain elements are defined by their un-balancing. Fire for instance is mainly a destructive offensive magic, electricty a widespread destructive/dehibilitating magic, water more a subtle mix of aid and combat, earth more defensive but with some truly offensive spells, aether as well a good mix, and air being primarilly defense. Sure, I would like to see some books fleshed out more too, but, work with what you've got. I RP Magmus as a Fire Mage primarilly, and because of that, he is mainly a solo fighter with incredible destructive capabilities, since he minors in electricty and aether, with air as a defensive. No water, No earth. Such is the sacrafice I make for RP.
Furthermore, OOC'ly, Cabals are an excellent way for WM's to RP. In all my years, I believe the folks involved with the Cabals have been some of the best WM RP'ers in the game. IC'ly, Magmus is neutral towards them. He sees them as a useful tool considering he distrusts the guild as a whole. The Sons of Arhat are a quasi-WM group that was started some time ago, but never fully came to be. I, along with others, have been toying with the idea. If anyone is interested, drop me a line at my aim (Magmus3654) and we'll chat.
But yes, Cabals aren't a bad thing. People that are against Blackfire are. Anyone who argues, I'll demonstrate Incinerate for them and proove them wrong. Mind you, IC'ly, Magmus would be -hard- pressed to admit openly he has Blackfire. It's just not the best idea...

Yeah, but that's only because Ye Olde Blackfire Cabal fully burninated any groups of fire-using mages who refused to join them. According to our texts, that included all of the fire-mages who were employing the element for healing and defense, and those arts have been lost to us ever since. Thanks a lot, buddy ;)

Now that is just more water-mage-descedant propaganda, forced into the books by Eth'Riel himself.
But, on the other hand...if Blackfire recently has been found again, wouldn't that mean the spell that was used to abolish the flames is still around, somewhere, somehow...?
...I think I found a new spell to search for. Heh...heh...heh...

Froggy prolly means Daervlan, but, close enough. He's the absentee land lord of the guild that waggles his mighty finger and says, "Do it...do it and I'll spank you!" Sorry. Just -had- to steal the quote from Dogma.
However, The Sons of Arhat is still a fledgling idea I wouldn't mind forcing into existance. If anyone is interested, look into the posts from a coupla' months ago and get a hold of me.
