I realized today I've completely forgotten to take anything for utility training. My little WM is only up to 6, so it's not that difficult.
I'm thinking of running him as an earth/fire mage, so probably avoid the air tree, which means no air bubble. What I'm debating is ignite vs. gauge flow.
I know gauge flow will teach from low ranks of utility up through a few hundred ranks, and even if it stops teaching it stays relevant by being the key to research.
Do I give up anything by skipping ignite? Does it stay relevant through an entire career like gaf would? Looking at the spell list, anything ignite gives access to, FS/FB do as well, and I plan on grabbing Fireball anyway.
The drawback here is the need to grind out 60 ranks of arcana to be able to read a gaf scroll, but that's doable eventually.

Ignite is a pretty good source of extra damage due to the way it works (the fire damage is applied equally to all attacks). I don't leave home without it.
I have never bothered with GAF so I can't speak to which teaches better.

Are you talking straight casting GAF, or using research?

This is a kind of scary thought, Air is far and away the biggest spellbook... even if about half the spells in it aren't worth their spell slots. I commend you.

GAF is a surprisingly excellent trainer at low ranks (I had the chance to play with it on preview). So my thought is to use it to train utility once I get 60 arcana, and even once GAF stops training utility, it would still be useful because I'll need it for research anyway, at some point.

I agree with this. On my lil WM I went fire book to start out, which included Ignite for Utility and MoA for Debil. These two work well together for some extra damage when you need it. I would recommend Ignite for any WM for the simple fact that you can put two different elemental damage types (Fire + Cold/Electric) on their elemental weapons.

I really like Ignite so far. I'm in the same boat on a new character. I went earth alignment for now to be able to easily use summoned weapons, Expansive and Reinforced Infusions to make the most of them, Stone Strike and Anther's Call to easily maintain charge with commonly cast tm/debil spells, and Ignite, Ethereal Shield, and Sure Footing as my other skill trainers. Ignite is quite nice with the stone weapons and I can easily train all skills.
