Air Bubble: A basic warding air spell. Reduces incoming elemental spells such as, Arc Light and Vertigo. (Add a new cantrip for the water breathing effect.)

OR

Air Bubble: A basic debilitation spell. Depending on if the user casts the spell in a room with water, the spell envelopes those in the immediate area in a bubble of air (think Fortress of Ice here).

Spell contest: (Spell vs. Stamina)

While inside the bubble, opponents are trapped at melee range with the mage. Impedes all 'death from above' spells.

OR

Air Bubble: A basic augmentation spell. Allows the mage to breath underwater (mechanism effect) and provides the caster with a moderate stamina boost.

Which would be worse? To live as a monster or to die as a good man?

Also, with a potential augmentation version (I know Warmages are survival tertiary but...) with the allowance of breathing underwater, stack that effect with a boost to the swimming skill.

Another proposal for Air bubble - Drop it from our spellbooks entirely and let us never speak of it again.

We commands the elements, and we suck at learning swimming. As rangers and other survival primary guilds get bigger and bigger, the places where we need insane amounts of climbing and swimming are going to get more numerous. Surefoot (I hope still) covers climbing, and we neeed one for swimming.

Call it Channel water. Or Current. Let it only be self cast if need be, in water that calls for swimming skill. The warrior mage simply creates or shifts the currents around them, allowing them to move through them more easily, I don't want to breath underwater for extended times, I want to get where I'm going with the air in my lungs lasting me until I do.

Since they're combining swimming and climbing into athletics, you really don't need to replace it at all, just tweak SUF to bonus athletics in general.

From the tenative 3.0 spell list:

>Sure Footing:
>An advanced Earth Augmentation spell. Pulsing balance improvement and parry buff.

Doesn't look likely we'll get an Athletics buff, and even if we did, it's not going to be a very strong one.

If combat penalties in water are going to remain, though, a minor spell to negate those would be nice.

There once was a spell on the planned spell list to change the current in a room/direction. But it'd be clunky and who would use that? I would, but I like clunky tools.

Keep in mind the M3 lists were for the most part just translations. There very well may be an Athletics booster in the future :)

I could totally see a theoretical Water elemental transformation that ended up being Air Bubble+++.

The problem is a more setting based one. Why bother? Underwater areas are so rare as to be nearly pointless and I doubt they're going to become more prolific.

I read this and my mind screamed that we need a spell that floods the room...

Underwater areas are rare, but areas with water in them still cause combat problems.

I ... think?

I'm... actually not sure, come to think of it.

Consider a spell like that on the table if so, but probably quite a ways off if it ever arrives.

I support being able to raise the water level in rooms.

Lowering them, on the other hand, is just silly.

It certainly seems like there's some issues with watery areas, like the canals with bloodfish.

I haven't ever set out to specifically test it, but I don't think watery hunting areas share any particularly standardized mechanics.

For instance the canals on Mer'kresh impose large RT penalties for all melee attacks, while hunting sharks in the ocean off the coast of Surlaenis doesn't.

I'm not sure about other guilds, but being underwater nerfs or kills like half our spells.

also ranged sucks underwater, and you get fatigued a lot faster(at least in deep water areas, pretty sure this applies to underwater too.) I'm sure there's some kind of melee combat hinderance too.

I support this crazy reverse air bubble room flooding idea.

also I felt we should have have more spells at our disposal even useless ones like air bubble(i figure there'd have been more than 10 spells developed in each book over 5000 years), but I'd rather have spell development spent on something useful than air bubble 2.0.

I think Team Survival tried to tackle it a while back, but they got as far as doing Climbing changes and making the Segoltha swimmable and ran out of time.

River Boa area in Throne is another of these areas, just funky to fight in there, i think it cuts yer offense in half or at least seemed to when using a blade.
