Alright, this question has a few different interrelated points, so here goes:
1) I seem to remember before I left last time, people had a pretty good way of determining pretty accurately the rank boost they were giving on SW. I'm currently sitting at exactly 100 ranks parry, and thought that this would be a good time to test it, which leads to part 2:
2) My evasion is 94. I'm thinking that maybe I'll try to get it to exactly 100 too, without ranking parry. This way both related SW skills will be at exactly 100, which sounds like it'd make math REALLY easy. This leads in to 3:
3) If I'm not using parry, I'll have to use shield, which is sitting at 80 ranks flat. I currently sport a capped croc-skin buckler, although I think gargs can somehow damage them even if they're back worn. I know they're not supposed to, but I swear one did one time. Regardless, if I'm actually trying to block with it, I'm really afraid gargoyles will rip it to shreds. I can't afford that. I remember that people used to talk about the construction on the ironwood buckler - is this still a good store-bought small shield? Lastly, it seems that I can just plain evade a gargoyle when I've got SW up - that's 10 prepped w/ a fully charged cambrinth armband. But I'm betting I might get in some serious trouble if a snowie, much less another garg, joined in. Is 82 percent of 80 ranks shield and 100 percent of 94 ranks evasion + SW going to end up getting me slaughtered in gargs? It doesn't seem like it should, but sometimes they're unpredictable.
Thanks for all help.

Ok, to head off the rest of your post, it is now impossible to determine the strength of SW using the old trick. The way it would work was that the order that your defenses were listed would change if one's magically modified rank values moved above another, based on stance points. Now, the same thing happens except only with base ranks, not magically modified.
As for dealing with gargs ruining shields, I've found it best to use store-bought shields when hunting critters that break stuff. If you're in Crossing, you could pick up a bunch of the shields that grendles drop for basically free. Also, if you're looking for arm-worn, goblins target shields are like paper mache, but at least they're arm-worn.
Ironwoods no longer are as awesome as they used to be. I don't recall the specifics, but I remember that they kind of suck now.

That is what I'm using now, croc skin buckler. But I can't afford to lose it right now. Guess I'll run through the fallow fields or something. Or maybe, if I can't tell a rank difference anyway, I'lljust keep parrying

The conversion to DR2 removed the functionality of modifiers, mostly. So they can't aid construction, boost app value, etc. Which is why Ironwoods are the same as Papers now.
As for shields, my capped croc-hide buckler is better (very slightly) in protections, and lower in hinderance than my fully infused SoL at 200 ranks of PM. So they're REALLY good shields.
If you're worried about damaging or losing it, I would recommend what others have said, just go pillage some from the fallow fields. Take 2-5 and just let them get nearly-broken.

Probably end up making a travel script if anything - I can't afford the weigh of carrying a few shields around. Especially once I start grabbing boxes. But thanks for the help everyone. So there's NO way to tell what type of bonus I'm seeing from SW?
