Raggler and I were discussing armor, robes, casters, and food and somewhere during the converstion we came up with the following idea for an armor skill.
Skill Name: Casters Robes
Mnemonic: robes
Other Requirements: None.
Available to: All
Prerequisites:
None
Armor Point Cost:
Rank 1: 20 - Robes ASG equivalent to Light Leather (ASG5)
Rank 2: 30 - Robes ASG equivalent to Full Leather (ASG6)
Rank 3: 40 - Robes ASG equivalent to Reinforced Leather (ASG7)
Description: Adjusts and hardens a person's robe armor so that it better protects the wearer. Provides an ASG boost of (2 + Rank) to Robes.
The main idea behind this is that it would encourage/allow more casters to wear robes and look like casters instead of going with leathers for the superior protection. Current approach for this today is to wear leathers and then wear armor concealing robes over them.

Sure, as long as I can get my full plate, or whatever bumped up 3 levels of protection too and it doesn't interfere with existing ARMOR skills.

That's not really a valid comparison. Using the proposed skill would allow you to wear robes instead of casting leathers, for example, with really no technical advantage. 1 or 2 points of combat manuever penalty difference is all that comes to mind with the tradeoff being that you couldn't wear ultra-lightened leather for the encumberance benefit. A caster can wear casting leathers today without any real penalty - keeping in mind that they would have already reduced the minor penalty that does exist by training in more than 50 additional ranks armor to get this skill. This skill would simply allow them to wear robes instead of ligher leather but still have the protection level of the lighter leather armor they can already wear.
Bumping any armor other than robes by three classes would have some pretty significant benefits by comparison.

Hmmm... there is zero mechanical benefit when compared to Full Leather (and an encumberance penalty if you wear max lightened armor) but there are some benefits when compared to Reinforced leather for action penalties and spell failure. So... there can be some discussion as to if you bring the penalties along with the increased ASG or if the additional armor training would or should offset that.

I also don't see where this fits in as a CMAN skill
I would think a CMAN skill should provide an alterior motive to wear lighter armor (ie: robes) vs simply making a certain type of armor improved which would fall more under ARMOR specialization skills.

woops I see that now, for some reason I read CMAN skill..
my bad! carry on.
However, I think something like Armored Fluidity might be appropriate for the pures and other semis.
Give rangers Armored Stealth
Give bards Armored Evasion
The armor training required and maximum possible armor ranks should be limiting enough for this to not be terribly overpowering.

It's true, at that point I would literally have no use for Vivaldi. I would really like it if rangers got fluidity though.

Bards should get fluidity as the most magical of the semis.
Keith/Brinret
As the most magical of semis shouldn't they be wearing robes then?
You're arguing to get a skill that fuses the physical world with the magical world via a physical ability.
It would make more sense for you to argue bards should have 1603 as a spell, as that would at least fuse physical and magical via magic.

I notice no one wants armored casting - speaks volumes about how useful it is.
If it were changed to 20% per rank I think it would actually be competitive with fluidity.

>Not that it matters, it could give back 90% and people would probably still take Fluidity over it. Better to get the spell off and live then get the mana back and get pwned because you failed the cast.
If you could just keep spamming the spell without casting RT when you failed, that would make it interesting.
