Any other time, I've had rogues of much higher skill to ask in game. Since they're hard to really run in to, I have to ask this... How can I guess the highest place I can pick boxes from? I remember, I think, that at 11th level, I was able to barely pick stuff from Grey Orcs while tripling in all my lockpicking skills... Is there like a table somewhere or something, or do I have to guess?

It's kind of learn by experience.

Boxes, even from the same critter, vary a lot, plus one's skills -- and tolerance for breaking picks or borking traps -- varies a lot.

As a rule of thumb, a doubler without lore can generally pick most of what he hunts.

As Tsoran said, it's mostly something you learn by trying to pick different things.

To assist with giving you a frame of reference, my rogue at level 21 with 3x picking and disarm and self-cast lores is able to pick most things up to around level 50-55. He doesn't often find locks he can't open in that level range, but it's fairly common for him to come across traps that he has no interest in touching.

There's also a threshold for when you can use Vaalin picks, and that'll help a lot when you're lower level. I seem to remember that I had a bit of trouble picking at 2x until I obtained Vaalin (somewhere around level 15?) and then I was able to pick up to 10 levels over my head with relative ease.

Its been a long time since I was that level, so I'm sure someone here can correct you with the exact numbers.
