During the Highman Games, there will be a storytelling contest run in the evening on Volnes (Monday, Feb. 11th, exact time TBA). Unlike the other "officially scored" games, participation in this contest is open to all races. The basics of the contest this year are as follows:

Tell a story, as accurately as you may have heard it passed down, recounting before, during, or after Maelshyve -- or all three -- of one of the Grishknel, Wsalamir, or T'Kirem members who were at Maelshyve. This may be an individual of great historical significance (such as Eahnimaki, Mishka, or Kantoran) or someone who may have made little to no mark in the historical records but was still present in time.

You will have 5 minutes to tell your story -- at the 5 minute mark, you will be asked to stop speaking. You will be judged on content of the story (including creativity and accuracy when pointing out historical details) and storytelling ability (tone, gestures, props). The marks for both categories will be added together into a single score for the contest.

Up to 18 entrants, first to come and sign up 15 minutes before the contest, will be the ones who are entered. In the case that there are more than 18 entrants when sign-ups begin, those present will be randomly chosen by spinner or some other unbiased method. If time allows, up to 6 more entrants will be taken on a random basis after the initial 18 entrants have finished, though there is no guarantee that time will allow.

As a reminder, the Highman Games will open on Leyan, day 3 of the month of Fashanos and close on Tilamaires, day 9 of the month of Fashanos. (Weds, Feb 3rd - Tues, Feb 9th.)

<<Monday, Feb. 11th>>

No such date exists for 2010. I'm guessing you were looking at the month of January, because the 11th does fall on a Monday during that month. (I have done the SAME THING when posting about events.)

I am very much looking forward to these Highman Games and I don't have a giantperson who will be participating in any of the games. Storytelling however...

Just the date posted has me confuzzled. Monday Feb. 1st maybe? But that's before the games start. So...a bit of clarification, please?

The announcement says that the contest is "during" the games but the contest is scheduled two days after the event ends.
(The post lists the event from February 3-9 with the contest on the 11.)

I have my story written but even rushing through I'm still just shy of ten minutes. I haven't even added the gestures yet, all I have are the tones down! And props! I cant forget props! Eonak save me elves are running this I know it.

If the time limit wasn't there, folks would be there ALL NIGHT LONG, 'cause we all know that once a Dwarf starts talking it takes an act of Eonak to shut him up.

From the official History of dwarves and I quote:
>"They (that would be us dwarves) were seen to be fierce of heart and known to be strong of spirit. Barely sharing words amongst each other, they used mostly simple, inflected grunts to communicate their basic needs."

My correction ahv' wot it wos yeh jabbered on about basically explains why we worship Eonak so devoutly.

Aha! You learned something that time!

This is why stories told by Dwarves take forever: they aren't used to using actual words and have no sense of brevity at those times :p And sadly, us taller folks don't understand grunts.

Frorin grunts and sneers at the same time in obvious distaste!

Get someone who's not used tah using actual words tah translate dat fer yehs!

An fer deh record, I've liked every elf I've had a decent conversation with. That's none, of course, if it matters."

Frorin grunts, amused.

I finally got mah story tah under five elven minutes, which runs about six er seven dwarven minutes. I thought tah display it here in ah messive tah see wot folks thought of it.. So without further adew.. Enjoy:

>tap pin
Frorin taps a mithril anvil pin that he is wearing.
Frorin begins moving faster than you thought possible.

Frorins eyes bulge excitedly as he emits a series of high pitched squeaks, his limbs move about in a chaotic blur.

Frorin produces a dented brass stein in a flash he raises it high in the air issuing a shrill cry which causes you to cover your ears.

Frorin gazes with dread at the stein as it slips from his grasp clattering to the floor, he grins and releases another volley of high-pitched sounds.

Frorin returns to normal speed.

Frorin continues,........what it was made from?"

Frorin winks and flashes a sly grin.

Frorin innocently teases, "Well dat my friends, is ah whole nother story."

Cute!

I hope you're all prepping as avidly as Frorin is!

We're not quite ready to roll FESTIVAL in yet (we're still testing out games and making sure we'll leave enough time between them), but I can give you guys the storytelling contest times for planning purposes of your own:

9pm Eastern in Prime
10pm Eastern in Platinum

These are both on Monday, 2/8.

The time limit + the cap on the number of entrants is to ensure that we don't go too far over 2 hours of contest time (since we know it will get a bit late for you east coasters.)

with this in mind, can I have double time if I have a partner and split the prize?

I'm serious about this, I know I jest a lot but before I go through a rigorous partner application process and find out who can actually drink me under the table I want to know if it's even worth it or if I'd just be getting their hopes up for nothing.

Hehe, you can have a partner, but you're still limited to the single-time entry. It would end up being a contest to see whether or not it's even possible to drink one another under the table within 5 minutes!

5 minutes to tell a good story? Oye, if it's that good, is it worth telling in five minutes or should it be relished a bit more?

While we would love to relish it a bit more, contests that start going over 2 hours can be taxing on not only the judges, but on the players as well -- that's the only reason for the time limit (well, we could make the time limit longer and reduce the number of entrants, but I'd prefer to see more people able to participate.) There is nothing, however, stopping people from telling longer stories outside of this small contest!

In fact, if folks have a great deal of interest in this sort of thing, there's nothing that keeps them from starting something up.
Things like, "Every third Sunday of the month, at 8:00pm Eastern; first prize is 100k, second 50k, third 25k."

I know that there are a lot of characters who can make 175k in an hour or three of hunting, to say nothing of an entire month. If you want that badly to hear stories, make it worth peoples' time to tell stories. :)

.

Kind of like my abortive attempt at getting some Siegery gameplaying done; sure it only lasted about three months, but hey, it was three more times of playing Siegery than I had been having prior to that.

Exactly! The House of Paupers had a fun storytelling contest last weekend, and we had a decent turnout with a lot of folks excited to sit and listen. In fact, it went so well that I'm pondering something similar for the summer or fall.

So is this storytelling contest related to the story contest Talisker held a few months back, or is this an entirely separate deal?

This is separate, but if you'd like to enter your story from my contest in this one, feel free to do so! Just be sure you can tell the tale within the 5-minute time allotment.

Will be down for the events on the day 6 & 7 of the month Fashanos, for sure - other committments withstanding - as the timings are not too bad for me. Thanks for opening it up to dwarves. Besides which, I may finally get an answer to the question: "what do the giantkin wear beneath their kilts!"

At the Highman Games, shortly before the closing ceremonies. The two events are considered separate because one is a written submission, the other is a performance that will, undoubtedly, force consolidation of the earlier submitted written material so that the performance fits within the allotted time frame.
