It, more than other weapons, depends greatly on your stats and training style. I've found three things to be pretty key.

1. Are you training Agility and Strength to the same or similar extent of your other stats? If not, you'll probably want to if you intend to use Brawling as your primary weapon. If these stats aren't equal to the critter you're fighting, you're going to hit like a wet noodle. You'll learn fine, of course, but you won't kill much. Agility directly dictates how often and well you hit with Brawling. Strength plays a larger role in Brawling because Brawling weapons are generally less efficient than melee weapons.

2. Invest in the best Brawling weapons you can afford (the parry stick is irrelevant, they're all basically identical). For a lot of us that meant dropping a pretty ghastly amount of platinum on hand claws at Guildfest. The cheaper alternative, the steelsilk wraps sold by the Crystal Monks at Guildfest, are also good.

3. Don't use a cookie-cutter Brawling combo (and if you're just ATTACKing, you may want to consider ditching Brawling if you intend to use it for anything other than meeting circle requirements). You're going to find that some combos work better for your character than others based on your stats and gear. Experiment. I currently use a combo that's 8 attacks long to maximize the hand claws. I've used a 12 attack combo before. I don't use dodge or parry in my combos, although a lot of people like to.

Above all, don't expect to hit as hard as you would with a heavy edged or heavy blunt weapon.

As for #1

Stats that effect brawl damage is move based.

Strength & Stamina: PUNCH, SLICE, GOUGE, KICK, ELBOW, KNEE, BUTT, LUNGE, SLAM
Strength & Agility: SLAP
Strength & Reflex: BITE
Agility & Reflex: CLAW, JAB, FEINT

As for #2 brawl weapons really depend on the armor you use. Cloth you must have brawl weapons, Heavy plate you are hindering yourself more when you use brawl weapons. In addition some spells and abilities work too change brawl damage, Mantel of Flames.

R>kick back
Now THAT would be a trick!

* Moving poorly, a grass eel bares a set of short but wickedly sharp fangs at you. You dodge, leaning to one side.
[You're solidly balanced and in better position.]
>punch back
Actually, using a weapon would probably be a bit more effective.
>

This should not happen... is it becasue I lost my brawling weapons? It also defaults to kicking chests (loot boxes) over a critter's chest... Now, I know it's just a few extra letter to type to aim it, but that's at least three more opportunities for a type per command, or if you use a script, it does not work to clean up multiple critters. Any chance of a fix for this?

You seem to have misread, ALGOTHI... I said that yes, you can add a few letters in the middle to aim it at a critter, but that's an extra three chances (minimum) of a typo per attack, which adds up to a LOT when brawilng (RT is only 1-3 seconds per attack). When I'm fighting bigger things that can kill me, a typo is not good at all. I can't remember ever typing JAB chest and having my dirk go nowhere while the game thinks I'm trying to jab a loot chest, hence the complaint. I'd really just like to know if there is any plan to fix this in the near future.

You are right, I did just skim the original message, my apologies. However, as it stands that the only way to be certain those attacks will work correctly. I believe the problem is a parser issue, and if I recall correctly, its fairly complicated to get those types of problems corrected. I would also like to have it fixed, but I would not hold my breathe for a quick fix.

I remember it was said that the various brawling maneuvers(tackle, shove, circle, bob, weave, grapple, get <lodging item> from <critter>) would be receiving an overhaul/update in the not-too-distant future. Any updates you could give us, please?

Yes, but I'd like for the ability to pull weapons from another to be based more on a skill check where you're able to make some good, solid, skillful successes, contrary to how things are currently.

Id like to see circle with a proper brawling vs whatever check provide the same defensive bonus as dodge. Seems odd when im weaving and circling that im also easier to hit..

I think they should take it a step further and if you succeed by a large brawling check margin, you should be harder to hit by a large margin, depending on the maneuver.

Brawling Combos and Brawling Weapons v. Plate on 06/04/2007 08:37 PM CDT

What are some good brawling combos for a Paladin who wears heavy plate and is therefore not so agile? (My Paladin is an Elf, so she does not have claws or sharp teeth.) I would like to include a shield slam and anything that takes advantage of my armor.

I have been experimenting with this combination. It seems to work quite well for balance and position.

circle, jab, kick, slice, punch, elbow, claw, slam, sweep (repeat)

Here is my dancing combo:

circle, grapple, shove, weave, bob (repeat)

Also, if you are wearing plate, are additional brawling weapons (knee spikes, elbow spikes, footwraps, etc.) an improvement? My understanding is that when an attack could take advantage of armor or a brawling weapon, the system only considers the weapon if you are wearing one.

System Announcement: For Barbarian purposes, the definition of "magic" has been expanded to include the mysteries of "I've got your nose" and "counting past ten." Enjoy!

Yep, that works fine. For me, I use circle, slice, shove. Can lock brawling easy and trains the weapon at the same time. Only 1 attack per cycle means the critter lives longer and teaches the paladin defenses longer too.

Parry Sticks Nerfing Brawling on 06/21/2007 09:57 PM CDT

Just wondered if parry sticks nerfing brawling maneuvers like shove, tackle, etc... was an intended trade-off for using them.

It seems to lower my brawling close to zero for those moves, which is immediately fixed by taking them off, and I don't recall reading about that quirk when they were released.

With only 50 ranks in brawling... Not sure if I was missing something from the original post but Shove seems to be alright.

The only intentional drawback to the parry stick is that you have to have an empty right hand if you wish to parry with a worn stick. There is no intentional brawling drawback and that is something we'll deffinately look into. I believe Ssra is still working on rewriting the various attacks you mentioned anyways, so we'll deffinately check it out.

Okay good, it's really weird.

I can't always duplicate the effect of reduced brawling, but removing the parry stick ALWAYS fixes it.

So I just wanted to be sure it wasn't something inherent to the parry stick.

This is for grapple, shove, and tackle.

Having well over 200 ranks of brawling, I was unable to grapple/shove/tackle tommyknockers (the latest instance). I triple-checked my stances but still no go.

I took off the parry stick and every single shove threw them into a sprawling heap, every grapple was successful on the first try, and every tackle worked.

I don't know why they sometimes get messed up, but if you remove and stow or remove and re-wear the parry stick, whatever mechanics the parry stick uses will reset the messed up brawling stuff, at least for a time.
