If you are talking about how one day you can be dancing with three of a critter and they never touch you and then the next day dance with one of the same critter and out of nowhere it one hits you and you die, then yes, I completely agree. This has to go. There should be no way that a critter you can dance with three or four of all day long - that just one is able to kill you in one hit. I have yet to be able to kill one of them in one hit.

Before I left geni, with around 315 evasion/240 parry back then, one geni it out of no where one hit me (ripped my head off). One geni was not able to get my evasion to concentrating on a wall rank. The reason im saying this is because, if its an issue of training, the point where a creatures open roll can be avoided seems pretty ridiculous.

Re: one hit lucky kills are stupid on 05/11/2007 01:31 PM CDT
From my experience, the issue is one of damage mitigation. It seems most of the time the folks who get obliterated are evasion prime/secondary wearing lighter armor. Generally not using a much else for primary defense either. I've been critted by most baddies out there from goblins to dancers to most of the new fellas in P5. Most of the time, the worst I see is a bleeder, usually just cuts and bruises. The key to my personal luck is using 100% evasion/shield, and 4x% parry, wearing HP, but I've seen non-paladins survive as well. Keeping your other defenses on par with evasion seems to be the big key to actually surviving these hits.
Another thing to consider, its not just monsters that crit, we players do as well, and I find it adds a nice extra something to break up the dodge dodge parry over and over again.

Players have no issue killing monsters they are 'hunting'. I'd gladly give up my chance to one hit kill a monster if they give up theres.

My stamina is not far behind my other combat stats. Let me ask you this; what armor are you wearing when you hunt, over vital areas (head/body?).

Currently HC, however, before cloth and bone Navak was in two all-armor setups with the same results.
First setup was:
racial leather breastplate over abdomen, back, chest
LC vambraces
HC gloves
LP Helm
HP greaves
Second setup was:
HC Lorica over abdomen, back, chest
HP greaves
Leather gloves
LP Helm
LC vambraces
In both setups the pieces covering abdomen/back/chest have worse protection and worse absorbtion than a set of reinforced azures.

And I take it you took the open rolls to the chest given your argument? I can say I've really not had the same experience. I would argue that, even if there is a method to allow it, its still a silly mechanic.

If it didn't exist, there would be even less danger in combat.
I guess for some people that would be welcome, but at this point Navak can already stay in combat until he is hit by multiple criticals.
As you go higher it becomes more difficult to survive nearly all criticals, but surviving most of them is still possible.
Most of this should be addressed by the combat changes which are supposed to change how damage is calculated.
One of the first parts of that change was changing how reflex/agility bonused combat.
To me as a player, I would like to always have a chance to damage a creature. The old natural 20.
I can understand though how people would not like that going the other way.

my training has nothing to do with it. You really don't know what you're talking about, Navak.
I dance with 2 geni every day and don't get hit. This was a one time lucky hit that caught me. I've been hunting geni for quite some time.
This would be considered a zoha hit. I've been back to geni since that death and not been killed or hit like that again.
regardless, these types of hits are pointless and just aggravating. I would rather have a higher chance of getting hit, then end up getting a one-hit kill done to me.

Zoha crits would allow a ship rat to hit you.
These are not Zoha crits, which were removed a long time ago.

I guess I'll just stick with my training that has nothing to do with it and doesn't get me killed by criticals.

Re: one hit lucky kills are stupid on 05/12/2007 02:27 AM CDT
I noticed something odd over the past year, and was wondering if anyone else had seen the same..
My Warrior mage never used to get "criticaly hit" by black leucros, then somewhere along the line it started happening more, and more frequently. To the point where when he dances with 4 he's bound to get hit with one about every 30-60 minutes. In a year of hunting there now he's been critical'd about 20 times, and only landed a critical hit of his own maybe once or twice.
On the other hand I have a barbarian, that can only hunt in lecuros while stacking zerks. I've been hunting there the past week now, and he's LANDED about 20 critical hits! At the same time, he's not yet been critical'd.
So, my theory -
Criticals are a way to allow anything (critter or player) to have a chance to hit an enemy that they otherwise could not.
What might this mean?
Well, if you far outclass an enemy defensively, you'll get critical'd more. If you don't, you should rarely get critical'd ie if you need defensive buffs just to dance with 1. On the other hand, if you can only hit an enemy using buffs, then you'll be more likely to land criticals.
I have all the critical messages highlighted so I notice just about every one of them. Has anyone else noticed something similar?

>>Right, because heavy chain is exactly what a thief should be wearing. That's rock-solid advice. Good thing open rolls aren't an issue for anyone.
Navak also used two different all-armor setups.
Before that Navak used all-leather.
He didn't have issues with either setup.
It really is a training of skills and stats thing. If it bothers people they can minimize it for quite some time.

I'm wearing capped garg leathers and a bison helm, I hunt 3rd tier snobs all day and tend to get these a lot too, they don't one shot me though but typically cause bleeding/a nice big bruise so I have to run to the aesry autopuff and heal.
Maybe its just the higher creatures on the ladder that one shot you?

It's not just higher up critters.
Back when i had 35 stamina, 400 parry and 490 evasion with 400's leather and 300's chain. An Arzumo landed a one hit kill on me.
Was pretty stupid.

I think it depends on the critter you're facing too.
A rhoat moda's tongue coils itself completely around your left arm landing a light hit.
* Moving like a striking snake while when a flash of light happens to reflect into its opponent's eyes, a rhoat moda maneuvers at you. You knock aside some of the maneuver with an iron-banded parry stick with brown leather straps. The maneuver lands a good strike to your left arm.
I only wear leathers, and my stamina is very low. I wasn't berserking or dancing at all. Now if a geni or night barg land an open roll on me it'd probably wouldn't be anything weaker than an extremely heavy hit.

I learn defenses from modas very well. Don't get me wrong, I have my open roll frustrations as well. Died 3 times in under 2 hours because of them before. I wouldn't mind seeing them be done away with as well. Landing only a good strike pretty much surprised me.

Eh, ill just say that the basic combat model is good. Could use some improvements and tweaking yes. The open rolls as an exception to the normal series of contests arnt 'exciting' are frustrations.
