I recently started using chain in place of leather on my young barb, and I decided I might as well take a look at plate as well.
Here's what (I think) I know so far... barbs can work leather hindrance down to effectively nothing, chain to next to nothing. Chain seems to generally be considered better for anyone not relying on stealth, due to the much higher absorbtion, which if I recall correctly reduces a % of an incoming attack's power, while protection tries to deal with what's left and increases with ranks. top-end leathers seem to have better protection that chain but lower absorbtion, but can't reduce the offense by as much, resulting in heavier hits. Or something like that.
Now on to Plate... I don't see myself using it right now, because I've read that barbs can reduce chain hindrance to a very low level while only being able to reduce plate to a relatively unappealing level, and this reduced hindrance (added evasion) makes up for the lower protection and absorbtion.
So, am I right to use chain armor over plate, if stealths are not an issue? I would absolutely love to use HP gauntlets for the brawl damage, but I won't be mixing Plate and Chain and I don't want to sacrifice my defenses too badly just to do more damage with one of my many weapons.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated... metal armor noob at this point.

The barbarians that I've trained have mainly used either LC/HC combinations, or added a bit of leather as well, mainly for the stealth aspect. Since barbarians need some fairly hefty survival ranks, it is way too easy to train hiding/stalking while in combat, and plate makes training stealths a bit problematic. That's not to say I won't train HP and LP at some point, but not right now. When I go and backtrain some weapons, I'll also backtrain some armors, but as a barbarian, I would stick with a combination of LC and HC, or mix leather in there as well.

Some thoughts:
1. Train what you want that makes you happy and helps your RP experience. In most instances, ranks and stats can overcome hinderance.
2. That being said, HP protects/absorbs better than LC. The effect of this is that you will take less damage and take fewer one-hit death shots on average.
3. Because of the way damage greatly outscales defense, #2 above is not really noticable until pretty high level IMO. In short, until you get to celps/raiders (ish) you probably will not notice the one shot protection that much.
4. My final comment is that if you are not going to train stealth (which is a bad idea for a barbarian in my opinion), why would you not use the armor that protects you best?
Good luck!

I would say, if you have zero intention of training stealth, just wear plate. It'll lower the duration of your dances a bit, but the hinderance can be worked off to a relatively low level over time and you'll be pretty damn hard to kill.
Use a shield and juggle a lot, by the way.

Thanks for the replies; as I said I'm a metal armor noob and was wondering if the hindrance made plate hard to use or if it was mostly just that stealth suffered. I WILL be training stealth but my armor moves fast enough that just switching suits out will probably help to save my mindstate anyway. On top of that, at least for now, when I'm not in combat (RPing or box popping, etc.) I have a 30-something circle teacher for stealths, which is actually how I've gotten most of my survivals for the past couple circles.
Looks like I should find some plate, then... :::starts looking for plate armor and writing descriptions for another set of eventual alterations:::
I've heard that the half plate + accesories is a good route to go... I'll want to train both for the TDPs, and in chain's case a LC shirt + HC on the rest teaches both at an almost exactly equal rate. Would this be a good route to go for plate as well, if I want to keep them learning evenly?

Remember, half the people you know are below average.
Also remember -- if the world didn't suck, we would all fall off.

You are wearing some crimson hunters embroidered with a silver falcon, a kertig great helm fashioned with the scarred face of a grinning Dwarven warrior and some brass trimmed gauntlets of articulated glaes steel wickedly spiked at each knuckle.
The helm looks like it offers protection for the following areas:
head
neck
right eye
left eye
You feel certain that a kertig great helm fashioned with the scarred face of a grinning Dwarven warrior appears to impose light maneuvering hindrance and offers:
great protection and great damage absorption for puncture attacks.
extreme protection and great damage absorption for slice attacks.
good protection and great damage absorption for impact attacks.
high protection and good damage absorption for fire attacks.
good protection and good damage absorption for cold attacks.
poor protection and good damage absorption for electrical attacks.
If you were only maneuvering in a kertig great helm fashioned with the scarred face of a grinning Dwarven warrior you would be unhindered.
But considering all the armor and shields you are wearing or carrying, you are currently lightly hindered.
Lightly hindered.
dance eagle
You feel slightly restricted in your armor.
You push out your chest as you feel your eyes taking on a new and distant focus. The majesty of an Eagle on the wing suffuses your body with clarity.
slightly restricted maybe 5% reduction in dance time. I have a full set of HP that is also lightly restricted. I use half plate, greathelm, gauntltes and greaves. If I went with the armet (lp) I could get even less hinderence at the expense of a GREAT amount of hinderence. Since I can dance back to back dragons in this outfit (in celpeze or armadillos) or with a 2 minute berak, I can live with the slight dance time reduction.

I prefer plate over chain or leather for my barb. The other armors rely too much on the luck factor + not getting hit IMHO, and don't have enough of a damage threshold when evasion is diminished (due to knockdown/stun/web ect)
I'd rather take the slightly more often light/good nick
and pack some herbs than hunt for hours without a scratch and then get killed by an unlucky string of hits.

If you are going to go HP/LP wich makes sence considering the free TDP you will score this is the best set up for best Protection/training.
HP Helm and Half Plate with LP Greaves and Gauntlets.
Sadly LP Helms and body armor SUX yes with a capital SUX. LC is far better than LP for Head and Body protection.
Ahnoui has a web site with forged HP/LP stats/prices. Ask someone to get it for you and look it up. Real nice stuff. Picey if you gona go for the top notch stuff so unles you got 100+ plat you wont be able to go for top end forged. From what I understand there are HP/LP forgers out there that will forge pretty good stuff for free or next to if you light on coin.
