Are your tools very damaged?

My tools are in pristine condition. I have the techs to repair tools and protect them from damage. That is not the issue. I've been mining since the first mine opened, so I know what mining is like with various states of repair, encumberance, ranger bonus, etc. Have you mined in the last 12 hours Pendus?
If you have and you haven't noticed any changes, then what tweeks were added that effect just a few people.
If you haven't. Go mine a bit and see if you notice a change.
Because whatever happened, happened between me going to bed last night, and getting up this morning.

Is it a specific message that it happened on? For example, "Sparks fly..." and only a single metal nugget drops.
There was a bug in the code from the beginning that started showing up recently. Kodius had fixed it but it recently cropped back up with a tweak.
Also from what Kodius has told us RTs into the 20s are within the realm of possible outcomes.

There was a bug corrupting the round times when you hit metal (sparks fly message). This "should" hopefully be fixed now. Let me know if you see anything over about 35 seconds, as that is too much.

These are the times that I've hit high rt's that are not expected. I'm used to 10-15 rt's when uncovering boulders, but until this moring, I'd never gotten an rt above 16. Roundtimes when I hit nothing are between 3 and 9.

A spill of stone reveals the faint glimmer of metal beneath!
Waves of debris spill forth as you repeatedly strike the earth with your weighted pickaxe. When the dust clears, both a basalt stone and a small nickel nugget are visible on the ground.
Roundtime: 23 sec.
Mining out the entire vein, that was the only 20+ rt. The rest of the time that I hit metals and rocks stayed below 16 rt, with most in the 8 or 9 second rt with just a couple hitting 15 and 16.

Those are the rt's when I uncovered items. Rt's when I don't uncover metal or rock all remain in the 3-9 range.
I wouldn't even bring this to the boards, but I've been mining except when I have to melt it down to ingots to get my inventory down since the Wicked Mines opened, and I'd never seen rt's like this until recently.
But it looks like no tweeks have been made from Kodius' post. So, next, I need to figure out what changed with my character.

Suggestion for the first mining sights. on 04/09/2002 04:10 PM CDT
How about Stone clan and the Dirge area. Both have rich mineral
resources. Also pre-existing mines. It would help develope both
areas. I figure both are reasonable sights. Also the first mines
shouldn't be in some obscure place thats my opinion anyhow.
Also these regions need something. You could open the General
store in Dirge and have it sell mining supplies among other things.
would help get the place opened up. Also would help get a gem dealer
into the city. Maybe could have suggestions for the shop owners.
Like name, race, and description. A contest of sorts. Just a thought.

I don't care if it's in an obscure place or not, as long as it is in a place that makes sense. Plus, not everything can be mined in one spot. Different types of minerals and ore are found in different places.

A large vein of turquoise that the winds have exposed in a rocky outcrop of the Velakan desert, tempting miners to go deeper.
Animite nuggets found at the base of a cliff in rock guardians direct miners up to the place of their origen.
A rushing stream outside of Horse Clan offers up a wealth of emeralds to panners and the rush is on to find the best gembeds.
As a prospective miner id be more than happy to see as many places and types of mines as possible, although i must admit, what i really want is a mine car on tracks.

No, no, no. See, the dwarf goes first, and finds the veins of really good ore. The Tog comes behind, with the huge basket naturally, and carves a Tog-Sized tunnel. Then, hordes of gnomes and dwarves together can pack this new, quite large (to the smaller races, anyway) tunnel and carefully chip out the minerals and/or ores! Either that, or you just take a gnome tied to a rope and chuck it down a long shaft and make it chip away. Hmm....so many different mining strategys....

Kilan says, "Now you have to go down and get it, silly gnome"
You hear a loud wail from the depths below.
Kilan smirks.
Kilan unties the rope from the nearby tree.
Kilan asks, "Ready?"
A squeaky voice echoes from the depths, "Nonononono!!"
Kilan nods.
Kilan exclaims, "Good!"
Kilan drops the rope. The weight of something on the other end causes it to fly towards the shaft before dropping out of sight.
The shrill screams coming from the mine shaft soon stop with a dull thud.
Kilan says, "So damned hard ta find help, these days."
Kilan mutters cryptically to himself.
Kilan shrugs.

No, no, no. There actually are supposedly trees that are called 'Copperleaf', 'Goldlbark' and 'Silverwood' trees. They have....copper, gold, and silver in them. There is a book about it in the War Mage guild I think. Maybe other places too. Called 'Notes on the Mineral Bearing Trees.' Very interesting.
And I agree, quite a funny thing to read, that was. hehe

Re: Suggestion for the first mining sights. on 04/12/2002 03:50 PM CDT
Heh i mainly ment the very very first underground mines. Gee i need to get more specific :) . Also i kinda want Dirge to get a big part in the system. It hasn't had a actually worthwile system in a while. I figure places like Dirge and stone clan both having a former or current mining
base. Also would help to get some facilities open in those two places.
Like the being able to get the materials from the trees.
-Ibec Alshaerd
Re: Suggestion for the first mining sights. on 04/12/2002 03:55 PM CDT
Hmm....Dirge might be a tough one for some things. Since a lot of the minerals which may have existed have been destroyed through the volcanic activity. In the areas to the edges of the volcanic area, you would probably run into more metomorphosed things, which is where you can find a whole bunch a stuff. I think. Im only partway through Minerology, so I don't know it all yet. But I do know that all precious jade is actually jadeite.....and kyanite is used in the production of high temperature porcelain, and in acid resistant products.......::ponders a suit of acid resistant kyanite armor:: Hmm....
Re: Suggestion for the first mining sights. on 04/12/2002 04:44 PM CDT
Actually depends on the minerals. I doubt many would be affected.
You have Obsidian, forms of crystal, metals, maybe some type of marble. Dirge is in the middle of a mountain range. Maybe there could be new minerals discovered around there. Some caused by the fist. I seriously think it would be possible to find a treasure trove of materials.
I still think dirge should get a big part in the system.

found the book in the tower out by cogars out west gate of crossing, can prolly find it elsewhere. here are a few things from it, if you liek you can head there are read the whole thing ya selves, but i still think it would be a great addition to the mining system.

Notes on the Mineral Bearing Trees
By
Moonshadow Palantiri
...The phenomenon resulting in such trees is not unknown in the
plant world but has not usually been seen in this form. Many
plants are known to extract substances from the soil and rock
that they either need or that they wish to filter out as
unhealthy to themselves. The saltbush for example, that thrives
in estuaries, excretes excess salt from the ground in crusty
deposits on the underside of its leaves is only one such example....
...I will list here the known species of mineral-bearing flora for
the education of those new to this subject. Others may be found,
so this is by no means a definitive listing.
Silverwood - Famed for the veins of fine silver that permeate the
wood. Properly cut and polished, the wood and silver form a
harmonious blend of colors and textures highly sought after for
furniture and decor. Silverwood is also reputed to have some
useful effect against spells when used as a shield but no
definitive work on this has been done.
Goldbark - A tree with a coarse-appearing shaggy bark. When the
bark is removed and carefully cut open, it will often be found to
contain fine sheets of gold leaf in many layers. This is highly
prized by artisans for gilding work and the bark itself is
sometimes used in decorative ways.
Copperleaf - A wide-spreading tree with an unusual feature. The
leaves secrete copper onto their surfaces during the fall season.
This causes a most spectacular color change as it oxidizes. The
trees also when found in groves sometimes make a form of music as
the metallic leaves strike each other they sometimes generate a
soft tinkling sound like wind chimes.
Ironwood - A solid and heavy tree with tall straight trunks that
can become extremely thick. This tree infuses iron crystals into
the substance of itself especially into the heartwood deep
inside.
This makes the tree extremely strong and sturdy. Many a woodsman
has found a bit too late such a tree when his axe blunts itself
after two or three strokes.
There is rumored to be a grove of such trees that rise over 500
feet tall but no substantiation has yet been found.
Those who can afford the high cost use these trees for ship's
masts or for building fortifications as the wood retains its
incredible strength after being cut down due to the iron being
encapsulated by the hardening tree sap and thus being protected
from rust.
In the realm of rumor or wild traveller's tales are Diamond Oaks,
Crystaltrees, metalwire bush and the (reputedly) dangerous
Sunburner plant that is rumored to use reflective petals to focus
the sun's light on predators to the point of ignition, if such a
tale can be believed.

What is mining? on 04/15/2002 05:57 PM CDT
Re: What is mining? on 04/15/2002 08:03 PM CDT
Mining is the acquisition of ores, metals and other mineral resources (including gems) that can be used in creation of items. The system will cover three basic areas; placer or panning, surface mining, and underground mining.
Placer or panning mining, is sifting through silty deposits in or along stream beds.
Surface mining will be like foraging for minerals, but with it's own unique methods.
Underground mining is working in traditional mines or caves, attempting to extract valueable ores and minerals from the earth.
Each method will have it's own risk/reward factors.

Fial,
I'm really anticipating when mining will be out and just wanted to suggest a mining location for ya. Out in Knife Clan, there's a mountain cave that people can't go to yet, I'm hoping this can be a place where we can mine for ores and minerals and possibly have a hunting ground there making it somewhat dangerous as well.
Just a thought.

Gem mining... on 04/25/2002 04:58 AM CDT
When and If gemstones are ever abled to be mined, could gemstone values in the treasury/economic system be re-vamped or at least re-evaluated. I won't claim to be an expert gemologist. However, it seems that the value of various gemstones are a bit off.
Note. I'm not saying that all gemstone values need to go up or anything. On the contrary. I think that certain gemstones (rock crystals and rock crystals) need to be lowered, while others need to be raised just a notch. I think the super-duper rare gemstones need to have a pretty steep price on them while the common not-so-valuable ones should be not-so-valuable.

How I would do mining on 04/25/2002 02:24 PM CDT
First mining needs to be a multi tooled process. It needs to be a process involving the focused attention of the miner. It needs to be a dangerous process. So if a player scripts things like a cave in, a room flooding, crushed ore, a land slide, or a "no result" could happen. Below ill give an example of the process as i see it including both a good example and a poor example.
Good miner example:
Digs Gemstone the Dwarf enters the room
search tunnel wall (6rt) search tunnel wall (6rt) search tunnel wall (6rt) ......... you see a crack in the stone.
Get Sledge from miners belt.......get rock chisel from miners belt.
Pound chisel into crack with sledge (you manage to wedge chisel into crack)
pound chisel with sledge(5rt), pound chisel with sledge(5rt), pound chisel with sledge(5rt) (you make some progress) pound chisel with sledge(5rt), pound chisel with sledge(5rt) (the crack opens up your chisel falls to the ground)
get chisel, put chisel in miners belt. Put sledge in miners belt
get miners pick axe from miners belt.
hit crack with miners pick axe (5rt), hit crack with miners pick axe (5rt), hit crack with miners pick axe (5rt), (you make some progress) hit crack with miners pick axe (5rt), (bits of ore fall to the ground).
Get ore....... examine ore ....... (ore sparkles maybe you should app ore) app my ore......... (you find your holding a nugget of copper worth about 53 kronars)
Put ore in my ore Sample bag
Examine crack (crack seems emty of ore maybe you should dig elsewhere).
Search tunnel floor search tunnel floor.....ect....
Bad miner Example:
Causs Landslide the Elf enters the room
search tunnel roof (6rt) search tunnel roof (6rt) search tunnel roof (6rt) ......... you see a crack in the stone.
Get Sledge from miners belt.......get rock chisel from miners belt.
Pound chisel into crack with sledge (10rt)(you manage to wedge chisel into crack)
pound chisel with sledge(5rt), pound chisel with sledge(5rt), pound chisel with sledge(5rt) (you make some progress) pound chisel with sledge(5rt), pound chisel with sledge(5rt) (the crack opens up your chisel falls to the ground)
get chisel, put chisel in miners belt. Put sledge in miners belt
get miners pick axe from miners belt.
hit crack with miners pick axe (5rt), hit crack with miners pick axe (5rt), hit crack with miners pick axe (5rt), (you make some progress) hit crack with miners pick axe (5rt), (bits of ore fall to the ground).hit crack with miners pick axe (5rt), hit crack with miners pick axe (5rt), hit crack with miners pick axe (5rt), hit crack with miners pick axe (5rt)
(Water begins to leak from the tunnel roof)
hit crack with miners pick axe (5rt), hit crack with miners pick axe (5rt), hit crack with miners pick axe (5rt)
(CAVE IN!)
You manage to evade the first rock .......you fail to evade rock taking a light hit to the head......You fail to evade taking a massive hit to the head...... you are stunned......you fall over.... you fail to evade taking a massive hit to the chest
............Causs Landslide was just struck down...............
This is how i see Mining with some variations ........ Maybe a GM will repond to this post in some way.

In 1491 the Augsburg merchant Jakob Fugger lent the future Emperor Maximilian more than 200,000 florins to finance his wars consolidating the Habsburg territories. In return Maximilian gave Fugger exclusive rights to the profitable Tyrolean copper and silver mines. Large injections of Fugger capital into the mines to install all the most up-to-the-minute mining technology significantly increased productivity. When Maximilian became Emporer in 1493 his financial needs increased.... this time Fugger got the additional rights to the Habsburg mines in Hungary. During the ten years from 1595 to 1504 about 100,000 tons of copper from the Hungarian mines were sold on the open market. Meanwhile the silver was separated from the copper using a recently developed smelting process, once again assisted by the German merchant's investment capital. Under the agreement with Maximilian, Jakob Fugger paid 8 Rhine florins in advance for every gram of refined silver to be extracted: of this 5 florins went to the operator of the mine and 3 to the Habsburg coffers as a tax. Fugger was then entitled to sell on the silver at any of the locations where he had an agent or trading branch. If he resold the silver for 9 florins, this represented a return of 12.5 per cent on the money advanced, against the risk that the price of silver might drop...

<<Umm.. that's way too long of a system. A simple foraging/mech with a pick axe while either wearing a mining cap or having a lamp on the ground would suffice. Similar to basics of fishing.
>>
Yeah. God forbid we have an extensively detailed, well developed system. How about we just walk into a mine and type "get ore" and we get some? That'd be much better.

hey now, no bickering, that only leads to delays. anyway. mineing should be detailed, but not linear.
sure, we all have to start the same way, but say we want to do different things while mining, like....so and so wants to dig a deep hole in the west wall, while mister me wants to just expand the wall in general, you know, like make the west wall an inch depeer, like make the room larger by taking away at it's walls, um...one way would cause a cavein in the hole itself, ruining all your work, possibly injuring to killing someone, while the other way is a bit safer, (putting up extra wall supports) but less ore to be found. also, you could follow steams of ore, because they don't all come in ball shape. like, follow the path, or you could just dig straight. I'm babling now, hope this is enspiring or something.
I'de like to also add like gentle mining, not just take out a portion of wall, and looks at the rubble to see if any ore is in it, but rather, delicatly pick at the wall, and get larger chunks/whole chunks of ore = more expensive and time consuming. but hey, that's just me

Could someone please explain how the Museum and mining relate ? on 04/14/2003 09:05 PM CDT

The excavation site isn't related to the museum. I've done the excavating stuff before, never been to the museum though. There are certain supplies you need - I forget exactly what, but it was something like a shovel, a brush, etc. And I remember the syntax you have to type being fairly confusing. All I remember was it didn't me mech lore worth squat (there's a surprise), so I left after a couple hours.

Will mining be conected to foraging or something totally different? on 07/02/2006 11:20 AM CDT

Probably to foraging. Foraging's going to be a neutral skill in relation to the Mech Lore stuff, so making it a Foraging-based system will allow for the preservation of the Home Lore setup.

I'm not entirely sure on full-scale mining at this point, but on my project list is a mining-related system that will in fact be tied to foraging.

Mining should be a lore skill that instantly nukes a ranger bonus. Until of course they make rangerly strip mining.
