Years ago, certain enchantes had to be played - Drums of the Snake comes to mind.
In the new system, is it possible to play enchantes?
If so, how?
If not, what is the point of instruments (besides guild requirements, obviously).
I don't mean to be negative, I'm just trying to figure out where the bard guild is right now in terms of mechanics. The elanthipedia pages aren't really updated.
Side note: I just read about practice stretching and practice breathing. The first time I tried it I entered the command twice which apparently caused me to fail and start a really really long timer before I could attempt again. Uh, oops?
Are there any other new abilities like this? Is there a current list of evokes?
What's the best way to move bardic lore?

Piercing whistle. The command is "whistle pierc", and it's on a 2 minute timer. It's also very useful apart from training.

>>If not, what is the point of instruments (besides guild requirements, obviously).
As Seld pointed out, there is currently no point. However, the GMs are aware of the pointlessness and have plans to eventually rectify the situation. I think the idea involves either 1) earning money from playing in taverns, etc., and/or 2) inspiring the populace, which would have unknown mechanical effects. Maybe some kind of fame/prestige system too?
>>Side note: I just read about practice stretching and practice breathing. The first time I tried it I entered the command twice which apparently caused me to fail and start a really really long timer before I could attempt again. Uh, oops?
Don't do ANYTHING while practicing. Don't even check exp. It's touchy. I haven't figured out the timer yet, but I think it's around an hour.
>>Are there any other new abilities like this?
The practices aren't very new. There's also RECALL HISTORY, but I think a bunch of recalls have gone missing. Also the BLUFFs.
>>What's the best way to move bardic lore?
I do a practice stretching before performing, because it both gets me up to about 16/34 and supposedly buffs my performing ability some (I thought I noticed this early on but haven't seen it lately). But yes, most of the time I use piercing whistle every 2 min.

Aren't most of the guild confounds sort of skeleton systems right now?
Sure, bards is actually useless, but most aren't much better (ohhhh, as a cleric I can commune water sooner, which...I use...to train the skill the timer is on...).
As a noob bard I used a scream havoc/concusive every few minutes. Do one, wait a minute or two, do the other, repeat. Worked out the timer so I could always do one, wasn't the most efficient way to train, but it gave me a small combat benefit and felt like I was doing something with the skill.

Performance is not a guild-only skill, but it actually puts us in a much worse position. We have a rather heavy, hard requirement for it, and it does nothing. At least Bardic Lore has no requirement yet, and is very easy/fast to train.

I feel these are great abilities, but they draw from the mojo pool, which is only replenished out of combat (I think, anyway). Piercing whistle is pretty good, and will keep you fully engaged, but that's pretty moot.
I saw some weirdness with PYRE today, where it would pulse and call the guards, but there'd be no message about the spell pulsing. I'll see if I can replicate. TIL PYRE shouldn't be cast in a justice zone, but then, that makes total sense.

Sorry, I thought you were responding to this part:

P.S. I didn't mean to sound negative in my post about Performance. I'm not upset about it or anything -- there are several skills that need work, and that is just one of them. It just happens to be a bit of an extra burden on Bards because of the hard req. Though that is hardly a unique situation (e.g. Traders and Appraisal).

Just responding to the effective Bardic Lore training part...
I'm by no means the guru, but I tend to start a session by practicing breathing, then play my bagpipes, and appraise during the play. At the end of each song, I both whistle piercing, and scream defiant. One song on the pipes seems to be the right length of time between screams and whistles.
The practice gets my bard lore half way (17/34) and the whistles/screams get it the remainder. At the end of a session (approx 5 - 6 songs), I have locked up performance, appraisal, and bard lore.
Hope this helps.

I totally forgot about screams. I'm playing around with havoc and concussive right now. I'll definitely check out piercing whistle once I can. 18th? Thanks for the suggestions.

Enchantes can pulse without messaging. At least for exp purposes, so a justice check makes sense too I guess.

I've given up looking for them.

1. One of the two practice commands (once you get high enough to learn them). These can be repeated every 2 hours.
2. Screams/Whistles in combat
3. The few evokes that are out there live. There are not many, and I don't think any of them are near enough one another to train. And one can kill you. (It's a feature...) None of the beautiful old ones in the Crossing exist anymore.

You caught it before I did. I just looked closer at the page and was coming back to fix my reply. I evidently need to invoke my brain today.
I thought the page was for the old recalls.
Glad to know someone has listed the ones that are live. But there aren't really enough to use it to train like we used to use recalls.

You only need 1. Learning from evokes is large and they're all on a shared timer (1 hour), so there's no benefit from having a second around. Of course, finding one that's good for your skill level can be tricky.
