Is the spell Paralysis just hard(er) to target and hit than other spells or is there a stat I could train to improve my targeting? Seems most times I target and cast, it zips by the critter and rarely hits. 31 ranks in TM, hard to hit hogs and goblins. Tried rats/louts, barely learned anything, if at all.
Re: Paralysis on 07/07/2014 08:32 AM CDT
Years ago, Agility factored into the "to hit" calculations with TM. I've always focused on Agility and Discipline for TM. I have found in 3.1 that (low ranks|low stats|low circle) leads to general failure in many endeavors, whether it's combat, athletics, lore, or otherwise. Training gets better/easier with more ranks/stats/circles under your belt.
As long as you're able to keep TM moving and training, you should be fine.

>I was under the impression the Discipline is the 'to hit' stat for spells, with Int and Disc factoring into the 'how hard' component.
It was talked about that Disc would become the new 'to hit' and Int/Wis would be damage modifiers. I don't recall if all of this has been implemented yet or not.

Elanthipedia says those are the stats for TM for what it's worth. We'd probably need a GM to tell us that's how it works with paralysis. Paralysis is a subtype TM spell, the sole NDT (Non-Damaging Targeted) spell in the game with two further subtypes of NDT-Dissable and NDT-Debuff so I guess it's possible that they run through a different formula.
I think The Plan was for us to get more TM spells that are apart of that subtype and for Empaths to be the best at that type of TM spell(like clerics an undead TM spell). Though it always felt like that type of TM spell was always just TM getting attached and changing the stat content(if it does) as opposed to a normal disable/debuff spell. Hopefully we'll get a few more sometime soonish.

GM explanation last time I saw one: Empaths needed a TM spell and we hand-waved it for quality of life.
Kind of makes sense, you're targeting the effect, rather than simple waving your hand and going 'be tired now'?

Which is totally cool and understandable. There are far worse places to be. I did sort of hope that once 3.0 stuff calmed down we'd get a spell that felt a little more TM-ish and less debil with target matrix. I mean I get the subtype is debil with a target matrix, but something like the old energy manacles would make more sense if it was re-released as this subtype more then paralysis does. Maybe Mel has a bunch already approved and is just waiting until she clears some of the other 800 things she's responsible for off her plate before getting to.

Make sure you're using TARGET <spell> not PREPARE <spell>. The former starts at fully prepared and just requires 8 to 15 seconds to fully target depending on the spell and feats. The second can be done as long as you also do a TARGET after you prepare it, but there's no point since it's always better to combine the commands into a single TARGET.

I have an idea for an empath TM spell (vs constructs only) that amuses me greatly. I haven't had a chance to see if anyone else on staff approves, but I'm trying guys!

Raesh and his ideas scare me. This is a good thing.

Ya know Raesh, when you mention something amusing you I just assume that means we'll be able to accidentally kill ourselves with it.

No, actually not in this case. It does amuse me on many levels however.
How off putting would it be for the spell to be scroll only (As in: You couldn't perm learn it) as long as the scroll wasn't very hard to find? This is being discussed mostly because conceptually the spell is clearly Nature Manipulation (A Ranger spellbook) and not any of the Empath spellbooks.

I already use a lot of ranger spells, so I don't really mind that plan (Earth Meld is amazing). I wish the sorcery voodoo that makes you lose scrolls when you backfire had less of a chance to impact same-type mana scrolls.

Stick to life mana and there's no problem :)
