When am I obligated to get favors?
I know I get five freebies while Circle 1, but how long do they last? How long can I conceivably stay Circle 1 and not need to get favors?
Re: Circle 1 on 05/22/2008 12:51 AM CDT
favors protect you from walking the starry road (starting over from scratch), technically as long as you don't die you don't need favors, but i recommend getting them as soon as you can

Not only are those five free deaths free, but you keep all your gear. Once you start using favors (even at circle 1), it's the normal grave mechanics. Typically with my youngsters, I'll just play until I'm ready to get 2nd circle, then I'll go get favors. I don't suggest staying circle 1 just for the free deaths, though.

Currently I am still 1, I qualify for circle 7 or 8. I was going to make the push to 30 then do it all in one big dump and hit the TDP/Spell/Ability jackpot. But I am getting antsy.
Not sure if this is an appropriate question.
One reference says I need three ranks of my main weapon per circle, another says four, for circles 1-10. Which is correct?

The stats/spells/abilities will make getting there faster. No reason to stay at first circle, really.

>>Yeah, your right. I guess the neat factor of circling 29 times would be outweighed by actually using some abilities now.
Yep.
Also, the TDPs gained from circling 29 times will allow you to buy dozens of stat points which will help you circle faster. More wisdom/intelligence for bigger experience pulses, more strength and agility for more weapon damage and thus more experience, etc.
Staying circle one is actually quite counter-intuitive.

Honestly, I wonder if this got tempered a bit. I have played other characters who in the early ranks would get "You've gained 2 ranks.." rapidly. This has never happened to Ackfer.
On the TDP training front, the usefulness of different stats seems to change a lot (or new facts are revealed/discovered). So I am bringing everything up evenly together.

Magic-heavy guilds tend to be much more forgiving of character builds that neglect several stats, so this is probably a good idea.

Paladins don't have a dump stat. Though if you really had to let something go, you'll possibly miss Intelligence and Wisdom the least -- though keep in mind the Halt discussion that just happened.
Regardless of guild or race, I consider getting every stat to 20 the first significant milestone of character growth.

Righteo. :)
On another note, I am seeing a lot of young Paladins floating around (or at least people wandering around with the Initiate Paladin title and some in goblins). Suprised not too many questions on the boards from these new people.
My fave ability thus far is Protect. Love it.

I agree. Protect is fantastic. None of my previous characters, no matter how big they got, have ever really made me feel as heroic as being able to run in a room and protect someone with my tower shield. Sure, other guilds can run in and try to kill everything in the room, but if they are swarmed and getting beat badly... you probably wouldn't be able to kill things fast enough to make a difference. And dragging someone out of a swarm always seemed just a little unrealistic and OOC to me.

There was a bug causing ranks to think they were only as big as the previous rank during the first pulse. It was the primary reason this happened before and got fixed a while ago.

Re: Circle 1 on 05/29/2008 09:26 AM CDT
I was told once upon a time that paladins should keep stats fairly even when cashing in TDP's. I have never, not, used that advice, but I have never noticed any particular disadvantages, with the possible exception of needing to bring int/wis inline faster to use certain spells. I tend to raise stats in groups of 5-10 points each based on what I was told were related pairs. So I'll raise combat stats first in pairs: str/stam. When both are up by 5 or 10 I raise agil/ref by 5 each, then int/wis (for learning rate) then disc/char. Rinse repeat. From what I've seen here I should reconsider switching my last 2 pairs, as I like to use magic a fair bit in combat, but at 5-10 points variance at any point it is never a huge issue.
I agree, interesting discussion. I recall having whispered discussions such as this in the Crossing hall. That doesn't seem to happen any more so it is even more interesting to see the opinions of others in this forum.

And also keep in mind that Intelligence and Wisdom are the two stats that factor into perception, a skill you'll have to actively work on if you want to guard against stealing and stealth attacks.

Honestly, I haven't bothered with perception. Firstly, I don't have anything to train it and secondly it seems like a race with a guild that has it as primary and learns it in the normal course of their activities. Was just going to take my theft lumps and deal.

Heh, this reminds me of an odd story regarding protect. I had set "protect assess cover" while helping someone train. When we were done, I forgot to turn it off and went walking through vines on the way back to Theren. As I entered a room with two hunters, one of the hunters got badly off balance which will "trigger" the protect to cover them.. so I stopped to see what was going on.. and got griped at by the hunter because my protecting him was interfering with his training <grin>. As I muttered to myself.. "It takes ALL kinds in this game".

there seems to be a bug with the task system and protect though.
I was training my commoner, and having my paladin protect, as without my paladin there to protect, my commoner was getting wiped out. My commoner was assigned to kill 5 cougars. Even though my commoner was doing all the killing, they don't get the credit for the kills with the task system.
