You glance at a poorly made copper trunk.

I don't get it.

Can't use MY due to the parser. Just 'glance trunk'.

You glance at a reinforced copper chest.

Still nothing. Is there some sort of skill/circle/whatever requirement to use it?

IIRC the original version was a feat relying on one of the box skills.. 100 ranks perhaps.

>get tru
You get a worm-eaten pine trunk from inside your canvas backpack.
>glance my tru
It looks like there is 1 trap left on the trunk.
Looking more closely you see...
There is that grinning bronze face which makes you worry about performance art.

It looks like there is 1 lock left on the trunk.
Looking more closely you see...
The lock's structure is relatively basic, standard in every way without any unusual characteristics.
>glance tru

A fatty bladder hides behind a bronze face. Mime trap.

Seems to be working fine for me.

Thanks for reimplementing this, but I am not sure what the enhancements are. It used to be the same as IDing a box but now you have to still go through that or be penalised for not IDing it:

>disarm
You begin work at disarming the trunk.
The lack of identification of the trap hinders your initial efforts somewhat.
Your armor hinders your attempt.
You work with the trap for a while but are unable to make any progress.
Roundtime: 6 sec.

and:

R>get loc
You get a master's iron lockpick from inside your canvas backpack.
>glance tru
It looks like there are no traps left on the trunk.

It looks like there is 1 lock left on the trunk.
Looking more closely you see...
The lock's structure is relatively basic, standard in every way without any unusual characteristics.
>pic
You begin work at picking open the trunk.
Your lack of knowledge of the lock hinders your initial efforts somewhat.
Your armor hinders your attempt.
With a soft click, you remove your lockpick and open and remove the lock.
Roundtime: 4 sec.

I found it kind of silly that while glance identifies traps/locks, at the same time glance does not ID traps or locks.

Give it a RT, make it teach perception/locks/disarm a slight bit (as ID would do) and have it actually ID them.

Whats the point otherwise? The only use I can figure is to determine what trap it is if you aren't familiar with its traditional ID.. But most thieves who do the box thing are well aware of which trap is which.

Being able to see how many traps/locks is cute but little else. I don't bother to use, at least. Only have ~175 ranks in locks/disarm though, so maybe others have different experiences?

While I agree with you it could still be a useful way for sorting out AOE traps when picking in a crowded area.

It's useful for using on boxes you outclass. If you see it's easy when you glance, you can just go ahead and disarm quick or pick through. If you want to ID the trap, just use disarm identify with secure up. The RT for that is practically nill.

when we had Glance before it served as a substitue to ID. this glance doesn't substitue. that said, i've only tried it out in plat with my rather lowish level, haven't tried it with Schvartz in prime. but pretty much i expect it would work the same mechanically speaking.

glance should be able to substitue for the "id" step like before, imho.

One thing thats good is the new one tells us how many traps and locks are on the box, which is a good thing. But most of us are well-versed on what the various traps are, and do.

the world is broken

Yes, have glance as the "ID" for both disarming & picking. Even if it teaches no skills, having zero rt is nice.

This.

Considering it. It meaning the benefits of an "ID" with no experience nor roundtime.

You'll have to use IDENTIFY if you want experience (and RT).

Previously GLANCE was a useful tool for doing at level boxes, not ones you outclass. In fact it was the default verb for me when doing boxes. I simply don't find it useful at all in its current incarnation.

It doesn't need to give EXP, if we want that, then as you say using ID is the way to get it.

Or both?

Some others seem to have found some uses for this... but your opinion is noted...

But as I said, we're considering updating this already, so don't worry too much.

I never could understand why you could GLANCE and see the type of trap/lock, but you still had to ID. To me, if you have yet to ID the trap or lock, it should be reflected in the GLANCE that you have yet to ID them.

This now gives you the benefits of an IDENTIFY, without the roundtime or experience.
