Hello. I just wanted to throw this this out there for others to contribute points on if you would.
I have been playing my character off and on over the many years and he is now reaching lvl 80. I know that is now very high, its the highest I have gotten.
Any way I have been grown rather disenchanted with what had always been my favorite guild for since 97.
My main issues are that our main area of magic seems a bit bland or lacking. We have a scores of ways to kaboom something but more seems missing.
we suffer from our tert skills. My magic skills are nearly triple my defenses and double my weapons.
Summon weapon seems interesting but also rather like a fun toy for the most part.
Summoning itself is anything fun to practice. Being forced to sit and meditate to practice it is ineffective.
Familiars... that's a whole other thread.
Been waiting ages for enchanting and from what it might currently be like is not so thrilling.
Now I have played all the other guolds off and on over the many years. Some don't appeal to me much.
With fighting I like to learn weapons and armor well. I did enjoy paladin some with how their skill set goes. But their magic is not all so thrilling. Heck I wanted to get a bless scroll for a paladin to learn for ages.
I tried barbarian but total focus on weapons and combat didn't thrill me greatly. I admit I like having magic.
Any advice or ideas? So far much of my fun has been helping new players.

Re: Would you reroll? on 04/10/2015 06:38 AM CDT
WM's today aren't really different from how they have always been. Our spells for the most part are solid with a few exceptions. Tert skills are an issue for every guild. Yes, WM's have some pretty important things as tert, but the fact we have spells to buff our tert skills (when lots of guilds don't) makes it fine. However, any guild is going to have primary skills far higher than their terts.
The new weapon skill is pretty incredible, though I expect people who are not weaponsmiths to not feel compelled to invest in it.
You absolutely do not need to sit and meditate to train Summoning - I can lock it in combat without a ton of effort.
Familiars are in a good place and are going to be getting even more functional.
It sounds to me like you need to just play some other stuff for a bit or relax and roleplay and enjoy yourself. None of the points you listed really other than the Summoning and Familiar stuff are going to be remedied by playing another guild, as they are basic design ideas about the game (tert skills, etc).

As someone who is currently dealing with a similar situation:
No. Do not reroll. If you must, just make a new character, either by deactivating your current one, or buying another character slot.
Rerolling has left me feeling dis-anchored, waffling between a bunch of guilds, initially attracted to the bright side then after about 3 hours going 'well, this is the same, except now I'm doing it in rats instead of X'. I've got no real reason to stick with any, so I've sort of fallen into a 'eh, let's try this one now' pattern where I run through a bunch of guilds.
Getting to level 80 isn't nothing, it's honestly about mid-game now (I'd say the game 'really' starts to open up around 50th, when you start hitting 200-300 in skills).
It's faster to correct any training issues you've created for yourself at a higher level because you have better mentals and can take higher risk vs. reward options than lower level characters, and you have more tools in your toolbox to make life easier.

I had kind of assumed this, but I want to echo the point as well. I am someone who has rerolled A LOT since the beginning of the game. I love low-level characters, and have wiped probably 300 circles across a dozen characters. I do not recommend it, the name isn't that important and frequently I wish I would have just deactivated instead. Don't re-roll. Deactivate, restart.
In fact, I'd recommend just picking up an extra character slot. Keep your main. Play your main. Experience the fun aspects of medium-high level play, but have a second slot that you just cycle through characters to see what the other side of the field looks like. Maybe you'll find something that you like better. Maybe you'll miss your main, but at least you will have options.

Also kind of disagree with this. IMO the experience changed a lot between 2.0 and 3.0, and changed again moving into 3.1. The thing that made WMs feel badass to play was sort of deemphasized by system changes and nerfs and nothing has really been written in to replace it (though elemental weapons are really cool and IMO OP might change his mind with time). Playing my WM sometimes feels a little flat compared to what it used to be.
OTOH I'm playing more than I have in months and having fun RPing so to me that's not super relevant to my experience. But I can understand why the OP feels like he does.

I feel WMs are in a good place, not a great place, but a good one. The system-level developments have been a huge benefit to us.
The biggest stumbling block for me, and I think others, has been continuing to play without clearing out old preconceptions about WM gameplay. It took a little bit for me to figure out how to play a WM again after all those changes, but it's been more fun since I have. A huge help was just liquidating my entire spellbook and rebuilding it slowly as needed.

Doublepost!
TM is in a weird, unsatisfactory place, but there's some comfort in it being weird and unsatisfactory for everyone. Your life as a WM will be easier if you just forget about TM for a bit. Pick a single-target TM spell you like the look of to keep the skill training and maintain elemental charge for summoning training, leave the rest alone for now unless you PVP and need AOE 'anti stealth.' Consider a cyclic only to soften up targets for weapons, save your mana and spell picks for your amazing debilitation suite.
Anyway you can afford to lay off TM for a bit since part of being a warrior mage is (and really always has been, but moreso with the exp range changes) letting defenses catch up.

Better to just call/email billing and have them deactivate the character and add a new character slot. That way you can still reactivate and play the old one if you decide later on. People should only be rerolling super low level characters unless you are really attached to the name.

Hey if you like having your spells nerfed.
Having no good disablers.
No means to handle stealth oriented guilds.
Or your spells flat out resisted, because well. Reasons. More power to you.
And thats not even mentioning all the issues with tert required skills that are much needed for combat.
But hey im sure you know what you're talking about.
Re: Would you reroll? on 04/12/2015 04:59 PM CDT
Re: Would you reroll? on 04/12/2015 05:30 PM CDT
You're spot on. Clerics have the same tertiary secondary and primary set up as we do, but they are much more potent in combat.
Why?
Because their spells are much more effective at what they do.
They can help mitigate a hit. Dish a hit. Or disable a combatant to allow a hit to land.
Even out of combat, saving memories. Raising the dead, or self raising themselves from a combat death they are superior to warrior mages in a Guild Versus Guild sense.
That said we do have one solitary item we top them in.
Warrior Mages never have to shake it for a god or clean an altar.
So why is it a problem to me? Who cares its combat?
Warrior Mages are supposed to be in combat. The title alone infers as much. But honestly we are combat ineffective. We can train twice as long to earn half as many tertiary ranks as other guilds. And despite that still be hit and even one shot by someone with an offensive ranked attack half as much as our defenses.
Can anyone else make that boast?
If so, please post.
Also if Warrior Mages are to remain so glass jawed with no teeth, could we change the name? Maybe something more appropriate like the Fireworks Guild? Whole lotta pretty bark, notta lotta bite.
Thanks

I'm not sure why your only metric is PvP when you make such broad statements like "Warrior Mages are terrible" and "not if they want to be relevant in any capacity for combat."

There sure is a lot of woe is me coming from warmages these days. As a guild, war mages are one of the more developed in my opinion. They have numerous extra perks that are essentially free, not requiring spell slots or much effort to use/maintain. They have a decent variety of buffs/debuffs, numerous offensive packages, and plenty of fun factor. If you feel that your life would truly be better as a cleric (or thief), by all means roll one up.

Why? Is the truth that painful?
The Guild is not currently relevant for Pvp.
Im not the only one saying it. Even if you dont care to read it.
So yes reroll if you're able or can stand do.
And do warn your friends away from the broken garage sale toy that the Warrior Mage guild currently is.

Forgive the double post guys.
I can appreciate that Mazrian, I know Dragonrealms is foremost and always a role playing game. But when the Warrior Mage guild is so less equipped mechanically than our counterpart for noncombat oriented tasks.
Raising, dealing with the dead. We just dont offer that much to the community outside of combat.
It seems all the more imperative that we should at least be as effective or relevant in combat as they are out.
And we fall short.
Im not saying Clerics need a nerf stick, im saying there has to be some common ground here.
Its my personal opinion no one should be killed by someone with 50-60 percent of their ranks. Unless everyone can mimic that offensive ability.
In PVE I have zero problem with the guild as it stands.

I believe that DR is heavily PvE oriented and is not overly concerned with PvP.
If you want good PvP (and you're welcome to, there's nothing wrong with that) then you're playing the wrong game.
For those players who play DR for PvE, PvP complaints are irrelevant.

I appreciate you weighing in on this conversation.
But thats not true.
I was one shot by a combatant before the nerf and it has nothing to do with that.
Although I had this opinion prior to the nerf.
Warrior Mages were weak in combat prior to the nerf, but by its very nature of course that did make us even weaker.
Anyone deny that?
Re: Would you reroll? ::Nudge:: on 04/12/2015 09:00 PM CDT
I don't deny that many WMs tend to underutilize the tools they have because they have for so long relied on certain spells that performed better than they should. Whether those WMs shake out ok given the recent changes is hard to say, but I certainly hope they make an effort rather than making wild and senseless accusations.
I also don't deny that the hostile tone on this forum has already driven away more than one GM from having much interest in figuring out a constructive way to relate to actual problems WMs may face, since any and all discussion of the sort turns into an antagonistic argument by a select few. We have a finite amount of time to devote to a lot of needs and wants. Quite frankly given what WMs have most recently received, I'm not terribly concerned if development time is spent on more pressing matters.

There is no counter argument to be made. You are whining because you aren't the best at PvP claiming that Warrior Mages are terrible and advocating that new players shouldn't bother creating them. Aside from that being ridiculous hyperbole, it completely ignores PvE entirely which Warrior Mages have a strong foothold in. Also, the amusing irony of complaining that Warrior Mages aren't balanced in PvP while simultaneously asking for Warrior Mages to have their PvP balance take into account the number of PvE abilities they and other guilds have has me laughing out loud.
The GMs have already said countless times they are aware that Warrior Mages are on the weaker end of the PvP spectrum, and have listed and agreed with several player posted reasons why. Most of them are system-wide things that just happen to impact Warrior Mages to a greater degree, and are being worked on. E.g. TM damage. Constantly whining about it in posts that contain the phrases like, "Warrior Mages are terrible," and, "not if they want to be relevant in any capacity for combat," does nothing whatsoever to add to the discussion. The GMs are aware of the issues, are working on it, and are willing to accept feedback that isn't just complaining like your posts are.
Even with the GM effort underway, however, DR is simply not a PvP-centric game and does not have the capability of being balanced with respect to it. The sooner you figure that out, the sooner you'll work through your road rage issues on the topic. If you truly value balanced PvP in a game, and not just want to be able to say "Warmages are #1!" then I would suggest finding a MUD that does cater to it specifically, because you will never find that type of balanced PvP gameplay here.

Thats a very polite way of saying pucker up or shut up.
Im trying to start a conversation because in my personal experience as a warrior mage.
We don't do well in combat.
Am I the end all be all of Warrior Mage pvp? No.
But if someone can prove me wrong in my opinion, I invite them to. I want them to.
Because I want to know what they are using, if anything to pvp.
If you believe we underutilize tools in our aresenal by all means please elaborate on the situations and mechanics you are speaking about.
Because clearly I am not alone when I say.
We simply do not know what you mean.
Re: Would you reroll? ::Nudge:: on 04/12/2015 09:18 PM CDT
(Absolon does more than type 5 words)
No one is whining.
Fact, we are not effective in player versus player.
Do you even play a warrior mage?
I do.
I have the experience of playing one, in combat.
Do you?
If you do and have a tactic im not aware of, please enlighten the group.
Or just keep repeating whatever I say, and adding whiner, or hyperbole.
Honestly are you going to bring anything new to this conversation or just try to ignore the facts that I and numerous other warrior mage players have posted.
We are not as effective in combat, to the point of being little more than punching bags.
People are actually so defeatist about it that they are saying, pvp isnt even what dragonrealms is about.
Really think about that.
Everyone can play how they want and thats their thing, but... seriously, thats the consensus.
Who needs pvp anyways if you're a warrior mage.
