So, every time this happens to me I just want to pull out my hair. You are hunting on plane four of the rift, everything is going splendidly and then WHAM
A rift crawler generates by a burrow attack death crit. Now I know the rift crawler burrows are supposed to be really dangerous...as a warrior the best we can do anyway when one that we are fighting burrows on us is try to climb all the way to plane one and find a door/mirror (virtually impossible anyway, but at least its a theoretical possibility). That or carry minor sanct scrolls/potions.
My question is, is there anything that can be done to anticipate, counteract, ameliorate the gen-burst-kill of the rift crawlers (I guess hunting with a bard singing song of peace might do it?), or do we just need to allow for the fact that every now and then, when hunting on plane four, you are going to spontaneously die?
Dodging doesn't effect those types of maneuvers, does it? Maxxed AGI/DEX...Full 2x CM...Reducing encumbrance sort of, theoretically helps but this last one I was unencumbered...can't hold ranger mobiles in the rift...
Does stance affect it? I've certainly died recently while in offensive from a burrow (though it wasn't a gen, rather me crossing my fingers, going offensive and waiting after one burrowed on me...didn't end well).
Any ideas, input, thoughts would be appreciated. I sort of suspect there's nothing I can do though, yeah?

Hey Mohgran, first count your blessings that the burrows (arrival and otherwise) seem to have been downtweaked from the beginning where nearly every burrow seemed to kill and caused my own hair-pulling.
Three (training/tactics) things you can do to survive burrows (other than minor sanct, etc):
1. Stance does play a factor, but switching to offensive stance was the wrong move. Defensive stance is the stance you want for the best chance to dodge or minimize damage/death. Yea, different than what we learned with roa'ters. Of course, for warriors and other swingers they have a better chance of nailing us when in battle.
2. Physical Fitness (and CM) play a factor in maneuvers so 3x the skill.
3. Armor overtraining to reduce your full plate action penalty and getting rank 5 of armor slash protection. Slash is the main killer in burrows (crush being the other damage).
Oh, and Dodge is not a factor because we've been told it hasn't yet become a factor in the manuever calculation. Level, stats, injuries and encumbrance also play major roles in dodging (or no dying from) burrows.
If you have your armor points spent elsewhere, let Roblar know in game and will adjust your armor with some incredible slash resistance. This should reduce or stop your deaths from burrows. You'll still get stunned or swallowed when you don't dodge them but at least you shouldn't have instant death from burrows (arrival or otherwise)!

Thanks for the tips Roblar! I remember hearing the plane four hunters talking about how bad they were when they first showed up...course I was still down on three at the time I think (maybe one or two).
Especially THANKS for letting me know that I want to be in defensive...I had completely assumed that it was like roa'ters and offensive was my best bet...that's going to be a huge help, because I think that I've been intentionally going to offensive whenever possible...and that's not been working out too well, obviously.
Incidentally, I also train in Slash protection for armor, but it had just degraded before that last one got me (yup, slashed open my abdomen and spilled my intestines out).
I was certainly injured...usually am...meatshields and all.
As far as the rest...I guess it's time I start making a serious push to get that PF up there. I've been hovering just a bit above 2x forever, while I work on other stuff.
It's only the crit kills that worry me, as you know. If I don't die immediately from it, it's not likely to be a serious problem, between berserk and just...you know...warriors are awesome like that.
Oh, also although the spell-nekkid warrior in me cringes to do it, I have recently been carrying about some minor sanct potions for when they burrow on me...ever since I saw Annorax stroll through plane four with burrow impunity (coincidentally he was rescuing me from another burrow death)...jealous. But...for the gen-burrow that's still out.
I appreciate it much!

Actually, roa'ter burrows work the same way. Defensive stance is always better for SMR's (standard maneuver rolls). The other thing you can do is increase perception. It's been reported that that helps with some SMR's. It's unknown if that includes crawler burrow.

Perception is an integral part of the standard maneuver roll and applies to all rolls. It's shield use that is the occasional factor.

It should also be noted, if it wasn't already, that there is an exceptionally high (interpretations vary) rate of fumble/failure for the SMR Cralwer roll wherein the worst possible result for the character happens (rank 9 slash to X body part). If you have 50% slash protection, even with this horrendous roll, you will most likely be fine.
My suggestion, would be to get Armor Use to a point that you have rank 5 slash protection; you'll be negating some of the armor maneuver penalty by overtraining Armor Use as well! Each tier of reduction will lower your maneuver penalty for full plate by 4 which is equal to 12 ranks of PF (past 40 ranks of PF). Once you've got rank 5, switch to getting 3x in PF. Additionally, you could probably sell your rank 5 slash protection to other rift characters to generate income and/or curry favors.

In conjunction with this, although there is no proof either way, having 402 running seems to help (at least anecdotally)

Aside from the action penalty benefits of armor overtraining, is the difference between rank 4 and rank 5 slash protection that massive? One thing I'll take away is to drop my cavalier attitude about slash protection (i frequently forget to add it when it runs out, never carry spare fittings...that's going to change). I've been pouring all my extra points to try to learn Thrown weapons for a long while now, I'm about two thirds of the way up to full...if I drop it all, I could get my armor up to 200 and then some, but...mmmmmmm...I kinda wanna hurl too! Don't really NEED a third weapon style just now though...
For instance, if I drop hurl altogether, I could get to 200 in armor and about 1.5 in perception or about 2.25PF. Probably the PF'd be more useful in a lot of ways. On the other hand, if I don't drop hurling...it'd give me a bunch of massive post cap goals to look forward to (almost-ish there)...
decisions decisions...

The difference between 40% and 50% might not be massive but if your armor has any attributes that would reduce the slash protection (i.e. HCP subtracts 25% from your maximum slash protection), then that last rank can mean a lot.

Also, the added ranks mean more hits before it wears out. Not that big a deal... unless you're forgetting to upgrade it. In any case, it's enough that I never carry spare fittings.
My personal solution to the whole thing was to bump the armor up to where I was getting 12% armor penalty reduction in full plate, (280 ranks of armor use), 5 ranks of slash protection, max PT, 2x perception, and max shield use. It's a crap-ton of EXP, but it's the best solution.
One other little thing: major sanct works too. I'd aquired a couple of 40-charge major sanct rods at a previous EG, and those saved my bacon many times, until I was able to get all the other keys in place.

Agreed, I believe this is the best way, but he first he needs to cap. Level, stance, and max slash protection should help immediately, followed by physical fitness (because of the benefits other than burrows) and then armor overtraining/rank 5 of slash protection.
Perception was the last of those I added and I didn't see a big change from 1x to 2x (was already fine). PF & shield (not sure shield use is a factor) were both maxed before the rift expanded and I was getting killed constantly by burrows so I think armor overtraining & slash protection were the difference, other than a downtweak in the crawler burrows lethality (I started noticed more swallows instead of insta-kills).

I don't think the shield use helps vs the burrows either. We've been told it helps with SOME maneuvers. I have no reason to believe this is one of them.
In a nut shell though, the best thing you can do is max out PF and take armor to around 280 ranks and get max slash protection. Of course, you could get the slash protection from me or Roblar or someone else up there who has it.

One of the benefits of being perennially without silver is that my non-padded armor gets the full benefit from my Rank 4 padding...the trick from now on is going to be remembering to keep that armor fitted. The degrade message just got the red highlight treatment.
Again, I appreciate all the input from everyone. I'm going to get these crawlers under control...it may take some creative number crunching, but I'll figure something out.

So, interestingly, I've been hunting plane four for a couple days now making sure to have my 40% slash fittings on (I was really lax before in remembering to keep that up, I realize) and have not been seriously injured by a burrow so far...helps an awful lot, it seems. I still need to work on getting my PF up, but I'm cautiously optimistic that the situation may not be as dire as it seemed a few days ago. You guys are all awesome, thank you for the help!
