So my cleric's getting close to 30 (gods, seems so recent it was a big deal to get that level, doesn't feel as special once it's your 6th character to get there) and I was looking over the spells he's going to get in the near future. While reading over the description of 330 I got to wondering how much it's actually cast. I know that there's usually someone that posts they're going to be communing with their god during invasion type storylines... but has anyone actually used it beyond that or "ooo, I got this cool spell, I'm gonna try it now"?

I had an idea for the 4th cleric I got to 30, but you are right about it not feeling as special, and I never implemented it. Though I did a lot of stuff in the earlier levels by way of preparation so the fact that it was there influenced that cleric a lot even though it was never cast.

I hate that this is a spell.
I have only used mine once when asked for a GM storyline. I was told like a decade ago that communes are really rare and special, and if you even get one answered it's a big deal. If you do get one answered, never ask for another one again.
So, I have a spell that I've essentially used up my 'One and Done' on it.
This really, really, really shouldn't take up a spell slot.
I think my Imaera commune is posted on the wiki somewhere. I stumbled on it when I was searching for something else.

They are rare and special, but they're definitely not "one and done". You can commune as often as you think is appropriate. Doesn't mean you'll always get an answer and if abused too often, it can result in negative consequences.

I would rather the spell didn't exist. I didn't care for it years ago--thought it was a waste of a slot--and still feel the same. In the first ten or a dozen years I was here, I could think of MAYBE one or two instances when it would have been appropriate to bother something that powerful.
(Terate and the opening of the Rift, and ummm... and ummm... As I recall, the last time I mentioned this, I was similarly stumped.)
I think it makes more sense as a verb--kind of like Act/visible to the room, kind of like MyChar/visible to the GMs in the room already, kind of like Report/visible & alerting the rest of the GMs not already in the room--and I don't even insist that it be a level-limited verb (what's so divinely magical about spending 30 mana, versus more, or less?), either.
Nor profession-limited, either: One of the most successful 'religions' in the game was started by a Sorcerer, a Bard, and a Ranger.

330 should be an innate ability for clerics of the appropriate level and training. Its definitely a unique ability that can create character defining moments (for better or worse) but it shouldnt take up a spell slot given the intended usage.
That would then leave both 330 and 320 as empty slots. Maybe we can start tossing ideas around to inspire Estild and co?

But what do clerics need for a 330 and 320 spell? Our on version of something like Ensorcell? One that adds a chance of trueshot to weapons/attacks? And lowers cman penalties to armor?
I'd like to see a ball bolt spell for 320, something like holy bolt but on crack.
Why were at it, can we please combine 309 with 315? Then that would free up 309 for something snazzy.
Funny thing, the recent story was very Koar-centric and since one of my friends is a cleric of Koar, one time I wondered aloud about the thought of communing with him. Every last character who replied to that one said no, don't even think about it. So even in that context I'm guessing it's not of much use.
I agree with others that I'd rather see it as a verb or cleric ability than basically a non-spell.

Agree with others - Commune would fit more as an innate Cleric ability that is unlocked at Level 30 than wasting a spell slot.
However, I'm fairly certain GM Estild noted in another thread that they'd need a replacement idea for as pell slot before doing something like this (I believe it was in reference to consolidating some spells to open up spell slots - basically they'd need a ready replacement for the newly vacant spell slot.)
My new Cleric is rapidly approaching L30 and it does seem a bit of a let down that 330 has such a niche RP-centric ability that isn't often used. Coupled with the fact there is no 320, there seems to be a long wait between 319 and 335 in which you only get Holy Receptacle in-between. Holy Receptacle is awesome, though I feel the loss of 2 spell slots is a bit harsh.
I, unfortunately, have no idea what to propose for 330 or 320, though - hope some others with better ideas on that can propose something that may actually get put into development.

Yea, I've had this same thought many times.
I'd have liked to have gotten excited about 325, but between the difficulty of finding a orb that's actually valuable enough to change a silver wand into gold (even in one of the richest hunting areas for levels 25-30, these aren't exactly common) and the training costs making other useful aspects out of reach without pretty big compromises until at least my mid 30's just makes me wonder why it wasn't made a level 30 or 35 spell to begin with.

What silver value do you need on the gems, to get the silver-to-gold?
I find and/or make (through lucky results on Purification Song/1004) orbs on a routine basis. Everything from 1k star rubies through 3-5k pearls to 8-10 emeralds and diamonds.
When Krakii was still blowing up boxes for the amusement value, I never saw silver slabs much larger than the 2-8k range; remember that slagging down the coins has inherent wastage.
Typical silver value I'm seeing in (the same place I'm pulling the diamonds and emeralds as critter drops) is 1-3k in coins inside, although over the weekend I did open one that had just a bit under 6k in it. That one was a statistical outlier, though.
.
Short version: tell me what kinds/silver values of the orbs you need, and I can hook you up when we meet for the next Ensorcellment. :)

This is exactly correct. I have no issue with Commune being an innate Cleric ability. But there's no point in doing so unless we have something to fill the 330 spell slot. Our goal is always to fill empty spell slots, not create new ones. :)

Honestly, I don't know what value I need.
The one I tried it with was worth 1.5k, which I assumed would be valuable enough since silver wands sell for much less at the pawn... but apparently the actual value of silver wands is vastly different then what the pawn shop sells them for, the spell uses a different valuation then other systems, or there are other training/stat/level requirements I'm not aware of and aren't listed on the wiki that preventing it from working.
So, I appreciate the offer, but it's really not a big enough deal to worry others about. When I have the skills necessary to make chrisms, I'll be sure to hit you up though.

I think the only time I bothered to try buying a wand from the alchemist, we still had the Merchant Manager to enter inside shops. And it cost like 4-6k, as I recall.
(They, uhhh... they're a lot cheaper to find as treasure. <nod>)
Try checking in your local Alchemist at the 'order' sign, or LoreSing to a silver wand for a value.

I found a large pearl that appraised at 3855 and decided to try it since it was fresh on my mind. I was able to convert a silver wand that appraised at around 700 silver in the pawn with it and it crumbled after the first use.
My cleric buys gold wands off the shelf for 2137 silver, so in the end I lost 1718 silver that I would have made off the gem PLUS the 700 silver I could have made selling the silver wand. If each gem could be used 3-4 times it would be useful, but as it is it's useless from a practical standpoint. Even with silver slabs my empath gets from the average box in some of the richest hunting grounds it would have to more then triple the value of the slab to be worth bothering with.
Maybe I'll try it again with one of those tiny pearls that's always an orb and see if I was remembering wrong, but for now I'm pretty underwhelmed with it.

Sounds like we need a new thread for 330 ideas and 320 ideas! And maybe even new 315 ideas since EicherJ mentioned the possibility of combining Neutralize Curse and Remove Curse. ;) (Well, they would have freed up the 309 slot, but I'd go the other way... 309 is very important to young clerics for the Landing graveyard.)

How about an "Avatar of Arkati" that when casts causes a tattoo-like symbol of the deity the cleric is CONVERTed to to appear on their forehead (visible via LOOK). While the spell is active, any gems capable of being made into orbs the cleric finds are one step closer to orb quality.... with appropriate lore training bringing them closer to orb quality.
I have no idea what slot this would be best for, but with so many being talked about being removed, condensed, or not filled in the first place; there must be a spot for it.

You're taking a 4th-level Semi (Bard spell Purification Song/1004 has the capability to make some gems into orbs, on a high enough [hidden] die-roll) that requires activation (prep/cast), gets better with training points sunk into Lore ranks (Manipulation), and has a possibility of backfiring (gem explodes and blows your hand off)...
...and turning it into a 30th level Pure spell with duration.

Speaking as one of each profession: Not a big fan.

I like the idea of making 309 into some kind of ball spell, either a non-fire fireball (I like distintegration) or with a secondary effect like Empathic Assault (1110).
As to the gate, clerics are really losing out on this one already. Paladins can open it much earlier (1604), wizards and sorcerers likely can (407), and monks and bards theoretically can (407/1207). So I think a better option would be to just have 304 replace 309 for opening it.

Yes, I could agree that having Bless Item open the gate would be good. It would make sense since Consecrate can do it.
I just don't know if 309 is the slot to put a new bolt, though. That's so close to 306 that I feel like they'd end up being close in power too and then Web would still wind up being the best. I'm with EicherJ; if we got a new bolt, put that in 320 and make it a powerhouse so bolting becomes more appealing for us. Not counting capped characters, I think I've met one bolting cleric ever and he was only ~1.6x Spell Aiming at the time (level 45-ish with 77 SA) and I wouldn't be surprised if he's dropped off by now. Meanwhile, no less than five melee clerics floating around the Landing, myself included...

330 Spell Idea on 11/17/2016 05:56 PM CST
What do you guys think about a spell for 330 that creates a Shrine to converted deity when cast? I'm thinking the best we're going to get with any spells in our circle would be utility based, and I can definitely see a lot of uses for 330 allowing a cleric to create a holy place/shrine when cast. For one, it would improve the chances of a successful commune. It would also allow a cleric to use intercession in any location for their converted deity. And if I'm not mistaken, doesn't 325 get a small bonus if the cleric is in a shrine of their deity? I know as a neutrally aligned cleric its sometimes very difficult for me to find a shrine dedicated to Gosaena. While this would be a pretty significant ability, it would also be a 30th level spell slot.
You could also mix it up a bit and add, um, catastrophic consequences if you try to create a shrine in a location that is also dedicated to another deity (either naturally or created by another cleric). Its a spell I could personally see myself using for both mechanical and roleplaying purposes, but not overpowered as far as what I understand shrines/holy places actually do mechanically.
Thoughts?
