Think I might prefer a two- or three-way deal consisting of lower-ranked officers. One out the west gate, one out the NE gate, and maybe another up near Kaerna or Dirge.
We'd probably just get some 7-star General or something, though. If so, could we put the origami crowns on him as an easter egg? :)

I got nudged about this this weekend. I'll look at our available NPCs and flip the bit on one. And it can't be a GL, so I may make the beggar do it (he runs everything anyway...)

I tried newbie-ish chars in Riverhaven, on the task system. And most of them would send me to Crossing. So I don't think it's just you.

Task System Feedback - from a new one on 02/27/2008 02:17 AM CST
I don't know if I count as a true newbie, as I used to play years ago. But I thought I would play a bit again, and I was thrilled to hear about a task system.
So I go to Anthelorm to get my first task. She tells me to go kill a king rat. I look at my 2 ranks of weapons and think, "Hmm, I'm not ready for that! I'll come back later." So I decline.
I come back a bit later, ready to take on the rat, and she tells me to kill a king goblin. "Hmm, she must alternate," I think. "I'll come back later."
So I come back again, and she tells me to kill a king cougar. Now the pattern has sunk in and I've realized I can't return to her until I'm ready to kill something higher than a cougar -- a ways off.
So I seek out Maisie, and she gives me a delivery task to Crossing. Well, okay, I really don't want to go to Crossing but at least it's something I can do! I'm about to accept the task when she wanders into the next room, as she does. I go to follow her and she says, "I guess you don't want to be helping me after all." (Yes I did BUG this in game.)
That's four tasks that I wanted to do but was unable! A bit frustrating. And after declining a task you aren't able to do a new one for a while.
I suppose my biggest suggestion is to make the task system forgiving -- let us do tasks that we've declined later (this could be accomplished with an ACCEPT LATER command), and don't make new characters wait to do a different task after declining one. This way we can look around for a task we like, choose it, and go back to do the others later. In most other games I've played, this is the norm, so I was caught off-guard here.
- Player of Niieth
P.S. I also thought guild leaders gave tasks, but I asked mine (Ezruh) for one and he didn't know what I was talking about.

Re: Task System Feedback - from a new one on 02/27/2008 05:55 AM CST
I'll look at Ezruh, there are some variances in GLs between instances we're trying to standardize.
Maisie is an issue...I'll look at modifying the code to deal with wandering NPCs (most don't, so the system doesn't deal with the).
The NPCs don't have a set list of tasks that they revolve through. In the case of Delivery tasks, it's a simple random to choose an NPC. Combat tasks look at your primary weapon skill and choose something on what should be the upper end of your skill level to go hunt (IOW, you should never get the Boss Rat task again). However, there is no real time limit on a task, so accepting the task, then getting a few ranks and completing the tasks should be no issue.
The timer to prevent you from accepting another task was to keep people from declining tasks until they got one they liked, but it's only around 30 seconds.

Hey Obseden, thanks for the speedy reply, and special thanks for looking into it. :)
>>Combat tasks look at your primary weapon skill and choose something on what should be the upper end of your skill level to go hunt (IOW, you should never get the Boss Rat task again).
I'm surprised to hear you say that. My skills when I asked were in the ranges of 5, 10, and 15 for king rat, king goblin, and king cougar (I currently have 19 ranks of my primary weapon, 25 evasion, 22 parry, 22 shield or so). Those seem a bit low to be telling me to go kill a king cougar? I'm just barely working my way into regular goblins.
>>The NPCs don't have a set list of tasks that they revolve through.
So what you are telling me is that I can ask for tasks, decline if I don't feel like that one, and later potentially get the same task? Yay, this is exactly what I wanted.
In this case, what I would recommend is perhaps some messaging that will make this clear to the novice. I've been feeling obligated to accept every task I ask for because I'm afraid I won't get another chance at it.

Re: Task System Feedback - from a new one on 02/27/2008 10:18 AM CST
Yeah, the weapon ranges, especially at lower levels, are not where I want them to be at the moment. I need to get someone a bit more combat minded to help me with the ranges.
I'll try and think of an IC way of doing the "yes you can get this again" messaging.
I'll also say that different NPCs have different things they will offer. Almost every NPC offers Delivery tasks. Anthelorm only does Boss Tasks. Fara does kill critters, kill boss, delivery, item recovery and skins/pelts. Etc... When an NPC offers random tasks, there is a random chance that a task will be of a specific type (1/n, where n is the number of tasks they offer), and then the task is randomly generated from that type. At the moment, Empaths are not eligible to receive kill tasks, though this will change once the shock rewrite is finished.

first one: went with my commoner to get a task <combat task> from agonar.
my commoner normally fights beisswurms. got sent to fire maidens. a bit out of my league, but as i did when i first got one for beisswurms <when i was still fighting eels>, i'll train up til i can do it>.
2nd trial:
took my cleric to agonar to get a task. got sent to gargoyles. refused task <too easy, my cleric usually fights black leucros>. 2nd try : agonar tries to send my cleric to geni.
How the heck are gargoyles and geni in the same "combat" category? something is definately out of wack.

I've noticed that about the Kill tasks too. I'm still having newbie-ish chars getting sent to kill cougars. Needless to say, I try not to get kill tasks with them, though higher up it usually seems to scale better.

Re: Levels -Tasks on 07/02/2009 05:23 PM CDT
Combat tasks are very simplistically based on your weapon skill of whatever is in your right hand, and largely do not factor any other aspect of combat into the equation (this includes on the critter/area side, ie, special attacks, gen rate, special features of the area, and so on). This makes critters not match up with "real" experiences via normal hunting, such that novices are sent to their deaths and veterans have their time wasted.

Re: Is the Task System still under development? on 07/19/2009 06:12 AM CDT
the task system needs a major overhaul.
key points -
only having task-givers in riverhaven and crossing
not including various critters who have multiple occurances in game - sends you to one further away rather than closer ... i.e. to bristle-backs on m'riss rather than in rossmans when you get a task in riverhaven, sending you to critters that are not an appropriate skill-rank for various guilded or non-guilded <i.e. sending a 40th MM and a 'necro-commoner" or a trader to the same area is inappropriate because while both may have the same skill in mundane weapons, the MM can easily take out the critters with spells while a trader or commoner has only their mundane skills.>
Such things as agonar sending my paladin to kill 5 warcats. I killed more than that, but the counter didn't go down because apparaently it wants a specific room warcat to fight. ::flail::.
there's much work that needs to be done to make it more friendly to all skill levels.
Additional-type tasks could be added as well. Such as healing tasks, perhaps shifting tasks. Or for those empaths with avengers, making it so you get "credit" for a boss -task when killed by an avenger. <right now empaths cannot get a boss-task>

The task system from GSIV cannot be ported directly to DR because we're using a completely separate core system for Tasks.
That being said, we are looking at expanding the Task System, adding new task givers and especially tweaking the combat-oriented tasks.

Have alternate awards been discussed? Money is great and all, but it's not exactly the most awesomest thing ever. I'm thinking like unique items. Maybe not super expensive or anything, but say you help Marcipur with some task. Instead of giving you kronars, she gives you a nice silk shirt with some pattern on it.

That's great to hear about possible expansions to the system.
Would it be possible to add a toggle field in the Profile menu that allows showing our list of tasks completed?
Sans the ability to port GSIV's system over, how difficult would it be to develop a few similar features and introduce them within DR's system? Mainly thinking of items as rewards and unique titles for achievement?
Such as the introduction of 'The Adventurer's Guild', which is really just a few guildhalls/outposts around the lands with a few neat NPCs that offer task options in addition to offering unique rewards and title options based on tasks completed.
For example, an Adventurer's Guild outpost outside of Throne City where an old gnome artifact collector rewards trinkets instead of money for completing 'item recovery' tasks on his behalf. Things like gwethdesuans, insta-hide smoke bombs, etc. that are already available in game, just rare in some cases.
Riverhaven and Ratha would be great spots for the only two official 'guildhalls' with maybe two or three more smaller outposts scattered elsewhere?
Just to be clear, I'm not suggesting the Adventurer's Guild as a new guild for people to join, but more as the background story for the core of the task system.
Especially if you can make it a certain number of a specific kind of task needs to be completed before certain item rewards are available so make completing the tasks more attractive. Like a foraging skill booster available as a possible reward to someone who has completed 1000 foraging tasks, or something like that.
These kinds of things (bragging rights from titles and being able to show off in Profiles, and limited use mostly fluff items, etc.) might make participating in the task system more immersive and desirable on a wider scale without causing any unbalance to the rest of the game.

Let tasks give quest awards. I'm thinking these could act like lesser scaled role-play awards. Also in the future let some rare creation system component parts be able to be rewards of the task system.
Implement randomly generated NPCs in towns which walk the streets and are able to give further tasks. I think it's silly having to go to the same NPC's in the same locations for all tasks.
Actually, it would be pretty cool if towns could sometimes spawn random encounter NPCs as well close to your skill level(akin to the mirror creatures in quests) which would either a)try to pick pocket you specifically or b) go crazy and start attacking random passerby's. Yes, randomly generated NPCs should be able to be attacked and stolen from. That in and of itself could be a task to either notify the guards or bring whichever NPC menace to justice by your own hand.

Task System Additions on 10/13/2009 09:36 PM CDT
Heyo!
I just wanted to give you an update to let you know that I've added some of the more shady NPCs around the realms into the task system. All players will be able to ask these NPCs for tasks except the ones located in certain guild-only areas. Note that these additions include NPCs in all five provinces, not just Zoluren and Therengia like the initial release.
This might be a good time to get yourself familiar with the task system if you aren't already! Please let me know if you find anything amiss in your adventures.
The new additions are currently live in Prime and Plat and will be making their way over to TF in a few days.
Enjoy!

Not specific to this addition I don't think, but I did a couple tasks and the messaging is a little ambiguous at times.
"A friend of mine recently lost a very precious tabard. She lost it in the area near The Crossing, Gildleaf Circle."
This was go search around.
"A friend of mine recently lost a very precious flacon. He lost it in the area where the blood warrior make their home near Whistling Wood, Barrows."
Also said it was lost it in the area, but is actually asking for you to go murder blood warriors.

This is really great to hear. I'm surprised there hasn't been more feedback yet.
Has anybody found any new NPCs to get tasks from?

I'm thrilled to hear the system is getting expanded! More, please! (Shameless plug for non-monetary rewards)

In Shard, but I'm unaware of if these were there before:
>ask juggler for task
A Human juggler says, "I do have a small task I'd like for you to perform. I need 11 blue-belly crocodile skins. If you could get those for me, I would greatly appreciate it."
[You may accept by typing ACCEPT TASK, or decline by typing DECLINE TASK]
>ask peddler for task
A flower peddler says, "I do have a small task I'd like for you to perform. I have a small item that needs to be taken to Guildleader Annael Ebeshalek in The Crossing. Would you be willing to do that for me?"
[You may accept by typing ACCEPT TASK, or decline by typing DECLINE TASK]
I don't know if those are new or not, but definitely pretty darn cool :-)
